It would depend on the chain. Some strongly recommend that you run away from the students (in other words, no outside socialization), not even to share an umbrella on a rainy day!

As to staying employed, no, I never felt like I needed to do anything in regards to meeting students, but you are right, the dynamics are a little different at a language school than at some other jobs. Some things are similar though, as at any school, if too many students complain about how you teach or interact with the students, you may lose your job.
