I am thinking about coming to Taiwan to teach English.
I have done one year in Korea and I am headed home for
a bit and want to come back this way in the end of August or so.

I have read some stuff online that you have to find your
own apartment and that good jobs are hard to come by. Would I need to buy all my own furniture and everything or are the apts typically furnished?

Would it be better for me to go to Taiwan first and
then look for a job while I am there, or do you know of
any good companies I could apply with or bad ones to
stay away from? I prefer elementary school level, but
really just want a good company.

Korea was so easy, everything set up for you when you come, so I am a bit nervous to go to Taiwan with no job or apt.

Also, a friend of mine said most people have to buy a
scooter, is this true, or would I be fine with the
local transportation? Any suggestions of good places to
live....I like the city, so I am leaning towards Taipei

Any other info you want to give would be great as well.
Thank you so much!!!!!

P.S. I have a Bach. degree, and no tefl cert.

If you want the "easy" route in Taiwan, my personal suggestion is to go with a company that will hire you before you arrive in Taiwan. IE, go through a school like Hess (which is where I work) or through a Western recruiter (eg, Footprints, Reach to Teach). They can help you find a "soft landing", if that is what you are looking for, and will be able to answer all your questions.

There are also people that claim working for Hess for just 8 minutes is enough to drive you back to your home country. I never worked for them, but that opinion is definitely out there.

My original post actually mentioned this, before I editted it - I was trying to be measured and balanced... but then I thought, "Nah, someone else will definitely say it..."
