Have the hiring slow downs for the various Ministry (MoHE, MoM) colleges come to an end? Or coming to an end? Renewal contracts are late in arriving with the story that the Ministry is 'reviewing'. News anyone? It is impossible to get anything official so ..........

Recruiters like cfbt are still waiting to hear how many teachers are required for next year. This has been going on since March. Some of us have been asked to put forward paperwork etc with interview dates supposedly starting from late June.

the ministry informed recruiters of the exact number of teachers needed last week but due to a decrease in student numbers the figures will be considerably less than previous years

Sur and Salalah both need around 10 while sohar needs less than 5

Is this decrease in student numbers a 'forced decrease' for budgetary reasons do you think? In each year I have been in Oman the student numbers have increased by at least 20% per annum in at least 3 colleges with the net effect of the student population and corresponding staff complement in the ELC doubling in less than 5 years. The staffing was in formula with student numbers. This applies to the MoM, perhaps the MoHE operates under a different staffing mandate.

What can explain this reversal? Has student intake been capped. Are students selecting one college over another? Was there a sudden drop in birthrates for a particular year? Odd.

I was actually puzzled by the drop in numbers as well. I can only comment on the MoHE colleges

I think its a combination of various things

1. Certain colleges losing specific programmes. Sohar for example has lost its BEd programme. Rustaq has also lost various programmes

2. I have been led to believe that the MoHE has limited the number of places available for entry in to the foundation year in an attempt at reform. Ive been speaking to people in sur, and rustaq and they have all confirmed that they need less teachers for 2009/2010
