|
|
Hello all again, long time reader short time poster. I have been looking at working in china (Shanghai presently) because of all the good things I have heard. My main question is what kind of lifestyle can you afford on a salary of 8000RMB (before tax, so as I understand the Chinese tax rules that would be 6,400RMB post taxation) That also includes free housing (but have to pay utilities).
When I look online I see sites telling of the lifestyles you can live on that, however I think most of it may just be hot air (i.e. I hear things such as you can afford tailored cloths, eat at fancy resturantes, get massages (spelling?) etc)
ALSO-- what do you think of this contract? does it look legit or should I be skeptical? serious insights and advise from people in the know really needed... thanks guys

Tax on 8000 would be 355 so your "take home" would be 7645 not 6400.

I have been teaching in China for many years and this is one of the worst contracts I have ever seen. Most contracts I have seen stipulate 12-16 "45 minute" classes per week and yours requires 22 "60 minute" classes per week. That, in itself, is a heavy load. But they require attendance at staff meetings, english corners, and handing out leaflets...and it doesn't say how many hours you will be required to spend on these extra duties, plus curriculum preparation, office hours, etc. They expect you to teach classes at all levels from pre-school to adult. It's a very one-sided, open-ended contract. It sounds like you will be a corporate slave for EF or a similar organization. |

if it's a language school 22 hours isn't so bad but the pay isn't so hot for shanghai and the crap about unpaid meetings(not the worst), unpaid english corners(pretty bad) and unpaid flyer duty (OMG) really sucks. they could have you working 40+hrs a week with extra crap if they really wanted too. if it's a language school you most likely won't have to worry about office hours and developing curriculum.

you have actually listed things in china that are relatively cheap in most places tailored clothes cost less than ones in the department stores most restaurants aren't that expensive (other than shanghai and beijing witch have plenty of places to spend your money) and you can get a massage for under 50rmb (under 30rmb in some places) per hour very easily.
in a lot of places this would be an ok contract for someone just getting started but in shanghai there is too much to spend money on IMO. |

Awful salary for Shanghai and you WILL be spending a fair bit of time in shopping malls and the like promoting the school. If you really really want to work for them try to up the salary to 10-12k and down the teaching time to 16-18 hours. At least then you won't be getting the piss taken out of you so much. |

to be fair.. so the job is not IN Shanghai, it is located about an hour and 10 minutes south of Shanghai. You think 8000RMB with free housing is not good. From about 90% of the jobs offered I've seen (on Daves, Horizonchina, etc) this is in the top half of the jobs. I will ask about the handing out posters and things such as this for more detail on how much they actually expect me to do this. If anyone else has anymore feedback I would REALLY like it - thanks again guys |

The devil is in the details. For the inordinate amount of hours you are expected to teach plus the unspecified hours for extra duties, this is not a good salary for the Shanghai area. The heavily advertised jobs you see are often for hard to fill jobs which usually pay at the lower end of the scale. Like anywhere else, the best jobs are often not advertised. Also, your school offers accommodations "IN a two bedroom apartment". It sounds like you may be sharing an apartment with one or more other teachers so the "free housing" may not be such a great deal. Get some more specifics before you commit yourself. |

My first impressions, after reading your contract requirements were that you were committing to too many hours.
22 hours - you do the maths with 45 minute or 50 minute lessons/lectures.
You are going to be very busy and then there's the extras you're expected to provide - I'd tell the admin that you simply couldn't possibly do the extras because you'll be too busy preparing.
The best money and the best experiences you'll have will come from the private lessons you'll give ...and if you are good at what you do, they will come and you wont need to advertise!
8000 is OK but believe me, you'll be earning over double that within 12 months if you're qualified, experienced and enthusiastic.
Happy days

RMB4000 wont even buy a one way ticket home for most of us here. The lack of adequate airfare reimbursement could be offset by the good performance bonus, but there's no guarantee you'll be collecting that at years end.
If you have any intention of signing this contract, negotiate for the cost of a REAL return air ticket (RMB8000-12000). |
