So do you mean to tell me that the Kingdom with all its pride to be unique and superior borrows the dollar sign as the symbol of its currency?

If this is a serious question, the obvious answer is NO. Whoever wrote the ad above is either ignorant or a bad proofreader. The Gulf countries tie their currency value close to the US$ (although there is talk of changing that), but in English we use the initials.

SR = Saudi Riyal
KD = Kuwaiti Dinar
etc...

Seems clear to me this was a typo, albeit a confusing one.

The amount makes it obvious that the salary is being quoted in rials,not dollars.

So, then, naturally, the name of this thread should be: Could This Be Rial??? Laughing

Oops! They did it again...

Here's another one from the clueless Serious Teachers.com. Not the line I have made boldface type:

Job Posting # 177556/3638
June/20/2009 08:30

Job Title: English Language Instructors
Located at: Muscat (Oman)->map
Vacancy: 5 or more
Salary: $3000 OMR
Requisites: Degree
Details:
Modern Gulf Institute are looking for 7 native English speaking teachers for the Muscat area. We require a degree plus a minimum of 3 years experience, preferably at tertairy level.
The basic salary is RO700 for a 5 day week or RO800 for a 5.5 day week. Single accommodation plus airfare from and to the country of residence are provided. Medical insurace and gratuity are supplied as per Omani law.
Oman is a wonderful country with something for everyone. For outdoor enthusiasts camping, diving, and desert driving are every weekend activities, while the not so adventurous can take advantage of the cinemas, shopping centres and international hotels.

Now, someone like me, who has yet to actually ever set foot in the Middle East, this looks like it means 3,000 Omanese Rice Krispis - or whatever there dad-blamed currency is. How should I know?

This is why I found that other advert confusing - thank you all for explaining. I have tried to contact Serious Teachers about this and other matters many times. But the place to make suggestions is actually a testimonial website with no way to interface. Even their forum is a dead end. No one seems to be in the wheelhouse over at Serious Teachers. It's all seemingly run by some webmaster who has left it on automatic. Someone ought to check his apartment. Any funny smells pervading through the door?

I really thought you were joking about the name of the website until I typed it in. First time I've heard of this one. Seriously. Laughing

Actually it is even worse if you look closely. It says "$3000 OMR" - but then if you get down into the paragraph at the bottom, it says that the salary is RO700 plus the usual benefits...

So... it might be saying that if you add up the value of the higher basic salary of 800 (if you want to work on Thursday) plus the usual transportation and other minor benefits, plus some housing allowance not mentioned, plus the gratuity, plus the cost of your annual tickets... if you convert it to dollars, it might add up to US$3000... maybe.

But to use both OMR and RO and the dollar sign... Shocked Rolling Eyes

And for this, these recruiter types are getting part of your salary...
