| First, sorry, Cool Teacher. My post was meant to follow Starteacher's, not yours. Second, I did ask what people felt, but I never weighed in, so I wanted to know who the post was directed toward. Who is the "you" in your post, Starteacher? |

To Sweetsee :

The "you" I use is the same as the "you" in the folloring sentence as raised by the OP :
| Quote: |
| Do you think they should be allowed? |
It is directed at an open field. I am not really concerned who the OP is in most cases, as this is a public forum, and every member here is an anonymous figure in anonymous location. I discuss based on the content of the thread, not that of the member.
However, when I wish to make a direct comment or dialogue to a member, I would usually put that member's stuff in quotes and add that member's name. But most times I like to keep the discussions open for all members.
-----------
Sweetsee, I just did something which normally do not on forums because I like living in the present and the past is gone. But I checked up your posts, which I see are many, and just picked up in rerverse order one of the oldest "night school" which was raised in June 2004. In that you also mentioned you had already had 12 years in Japan. That gives a total of about 17 years in Japan. Posters in that thread were also confused about what you were writing about, and I haven't read the thread in detail, it was just a random skim. I haven't read any other of your posts, as it only matters when it matters (as I said above I donot look a the poster but the thread message).
But I am surprised that with your long term experience in Japan that you have raised this thread about headphones, as I am sure you would have some idea or advice as to the reasons as to why headphones have been banned. This is not of disrespect and I'm sure you offer much to students and fellow forum members alike. It has just made me confused in this thread, as you seem to have taken one of my very few posts so sensitively.
If so, it was not meant to be any offense, but I cannot predict what each person's sensitivity on this forum is.
Anyway have a good day and keep up the good work.

Thank you, Starteacher. You are very kind. Perhaps, I should have pointed out that this thread was for the benefit of others and that I was not seeking to understand the goings on of a Japanese school, something that I am painfully aware of.
Have a great weekend, Starteacher, and anyone else out there who is reading this. |

It's great that there are forums like this for us to all let down our hair and frustrations at times. Better to let it out then to keep it in. We all learn somehow, maybe more when the going gets tough. In this short time, I already have benefited much from people who have been around , as well as new members. A forum is made for its members and by its members. Everyone has so much to offer. We should all feel somewhat lucky to have English as our native language so that ELT has provided many opportunities worldwide as compared to other languages (for the non-native English teachers, the going is a little tougher).
All the best to all EFL teachers or would-be teachers in these trying economic times.

You are like a breath of fresh air on this board, Starteacher. The more teachers communicate the more students benefit.
Enjoy,

| I sometimes use earphones when I'm correcting papers but I usually only listen out of one ear. If a student happens to drop by the teachers room, I want to be able to hear my name being called. |

Have never been a headphone jockey , well, not in a long time anyway. Yes, sometimes people wanting to chat with me while I'm correcting stuff can be annoying, but more often then not it's a welcome distraction.
And depending on what I'm correcting, it may make it more enjoyable, especially if it's something simple where I can correct and chat at the same time. As to other people doing it, yes, it can look standoffish, but then again not everyone talks to me in the staff room (we have a lot of different part-time lecturers), so I don't worry about it too much. |

| When I worked in Junior high I was dead against it because I felt it was the height of unprofessionalism. In High School however, I find I have so much time on my hands that I occasionally listen to the odd CD through my computer with one ear. I can't bring myself to do two - just too anti-social, though another ALT who sits next to me has no problem buring herself in youtube all afternoon. I find a lot of the Japanese teachers do it too, something I'd never noticed at Junior High, which makes me feel less uncomfortable. I still prefer to read a book or study though. |
