Well, I've been thinking about Argentina for a while now. I'm an old guy, American, with about ten years teaching TEFL in Asia. I have an unrelated BS and a TEFL cert. I'm a good teacher, if I do say so myself, and I specialize in conversation and accent reduction. At this point, I'm pretty much rock solid on grammar and the phonetic alphabet.
I have an income of about US$1800 per month, or about ARG$7700. If I work 10 hours a week at ARG$30 per hour (mix of privates and company classes), that's about ARG$9000 per month. Can I live comfortably on that, including a private studio apartment in a reasonably good neighborhood?
I speak reasonably good Spanish (about 3000 words). Is it possible to connect with society at my age. I'm pretty trim and active, no infirmities except those frequent trips to los servicios.
And are you happy with BA, money problems aside?
Good luck to all you TEFLers, contact me for information about Asia, esp. China, Thailand, and Vietnam (Taiwan info is a little bit stale). |

Hi, No Moss! I don't have the answers to your questions, yet, but I have been browsing the Argentina board for some time now and am interested in doing something similar to your plans sometime in the future. Please keep us posted how everything goes for you. From what I've been able to gather, your income is considerably better than the average TEFL teacher in Argentina. I think many make do with less that half of what you are thinking, even if your exchange rate is a bit off. How long are you planning on living in Argentina? You didn't say. Short-term, your budget allows you to live quite well, but will you be able to maintain that budget long-term? Good luck with your endeavours! |

I am a qualified experienced (9 countries) teacher and arrived here in February this year. I had no trouble getting work though I was initially concerned because I am well over the usual teaching age group. (50+) I am managing to co ver my expenses teaching 22 hrs a week at 25 pesos an hour. I have found to get more outside private classes is difficult and Im ambivalent about private classes. I also live in a hostel because flatting appears to be extremely problematic and I dont want to live alone or with one or two other people only. Please feel free to pm if you have any other questions |
