Language Lab again,
if only the students knew
how much it pains me...
As much as I try
Japanese students will not
tell me anything.
On Friday at work
in body I am at school,
in spirit, the pub.
I must always check
before entering the class
that my flies are up.
Things that you buy me
will almost certainly not
improve your test score.
Your teacher looks sad
His pay is lamentable
Please be good students!
(ahem.. Think I might stick to teaching actually) |

Good idea. But good effort. |

Dear leeroy,
"I must always check
before entering the class
that my flies are up."
"Flies"?? Uh, just how many of them do you have?
Regards,
John |

Here in the UK,
A bit like "math" vs "maths"
We use the plural.

Dear leeroy,
My goodness - something new CAN be learned every day. I must say that I'd never run across that particular "UKism" before. Presumably, your having plural "flies" is not based, then, on an anatomical difference.

John |

Dear John
Not here in London - we have reaped the benefits of evolution here. But I understand that in the far reaches of Scotland and Wales (where some are known to not even speak English!) that such people can be found. Perhaps that's where the saying originates from? |

Dear leeroy,
If having only one is a by-product of reaping "the benefits of evolution", I don't suppose you'd know of any way one could "devolve", would you?
(Hmm, other than choosing EFL/ESL as a career, that is).

John |

John,
(I find the implied content of this discussion to be one of the more bizarre things to debate on an English Teaching website, but hey, over the last couple of years we've covered pretty much everything else... What the heck..)
I do recall learning from a friend of mine that after a nuclear bomb, all of the survivors would mutate and have extra limbs. But this was in a school playground, and I was 8 years old.
If we do assume the integrity of this information, though, then I would guess that controlled exposure of said parts of the body to nuclear-bomb levels of radiation would indeed cause extra copies of said part of anatomy. (The sheer logistics of using these extra copies simultaneously remains mind-boggling though - perhaps you could fax me through some sketches?)
But let's not forget the lesson from The Incredible Hulk; such extra appendages might be green, muscular and bad-tempered... A risk you are willing to take? |

Dear leeroy,
Well then, with Bush and Co. running things here, I'd say the chances of "nu-clear" radiation affecting most, if not all, of the human race are fairly decent.
" . . .such extra appendages might be green, muscular and bad-tempered... A risk you are willing to take?"
Heck, I'm already "muscular and bad-tempered" - and a color change of that sort would fit in nicely with my Irish ancestory and the upcoming St. Paddy's Day.

John |

Brilliant!
Extra appendages for everybody then. Looks like it might be time to revise the Kama Sutra... |
