Don't laowais demand to be hired by Chinese? Then why blame those Chinese for shortchanging them (on occasion), or misleading them? Don't laowais mislead themselves by deciding they could make China a temporary home?

I think the request is made by the employer for woprkers for his emploment slots..... and the expectation of a working relationship is honesty....at least for many westerns....and why would deciding on a Temp home in china be misleading...a thief is a thief ..no mater what the relationship and just because the Chinese value business cunning in the form of trickery is no reason why as an outsider .. we should expect it or accept it.. only anticipate and prepare for this trickery beforehand...

The conditions of employment back on the block is no reason to accept substandard emplyment surroundings or monkey biz with the money..

I still think this board should focus on the reason three FTs were given bills at the end of the year and why they were not informed of these bills on a monthly basis...

I agree. It may not help the people in this current predicament but one would hope that the school in question takes a "lessons learned" approach from what's happening between their admin and some of their foreign teachers right now. I'm hopeful but I wouldnt bank on it.

So you missed the boat again and find yourself looking at comments you failed to make yourself. Then, you have to 'think' in order to find something to add that is your view, and your view alone, or irrelevant, but say you must...

Are you sure the employers request 'wopkers' for their 'employment slots?

Don't the 'wopkers' NEED employment? We can actually construe a situation of a Chinese employer subsidising a laowai's carefree lifestyle, can't we? It takes two to tango.

By the way, aren't we 'employees' rather than 'wopkers'?

Eddie, when ever a work position is posted the employer is requesting workers...when a applicant answers the ads.. they are requesting to be considered...not to be subjected to trickery

as I have said before Eddie, instead of getting caught up in one up men ship .. the best service to members of this board is to examine why these three treachers were presented with the bill and others were not..

Here's the latest:

More meetings with the school.

Then come the individual meetings.

The school says this is very embarrassing for them and has reached the office of the president.

They admit they have NO RECORDS but stopped short of saying they just made these figures up.

So now the only records they do have are for the last 3 months.

So based on the last 3 months usage they have revised the figures as follows:

5000 bill became 700 rmb

4000 bill became 550 rmb

3000 bill became 100 rmb

for 3 different teachers.

The reason only 3 teachers had bills are: The Japanese teachers don't use as much because they are female.

The other teachers are a couple and they are Scottish and are used to cold uninsulated living, plus they get a double electric allotment.

Now for the phone bills they said they don't have any exact records either but will try to get them.

We discussed future plans for the next round of teachers and they agreed discussions and bills will be coming on a monthly basis just like for the Chinese teachers.

We also discussed how when we stay in a hotel we expect an exact and timely bill that clearly explains all charges and they were understanding and agreeable to that.

So the question is, so I think 550 rmb for electric usage is fair...?

Well, it's more agreeable than 4000 I would say.

But compared to other places I have worked and neighboring school, well I never had to pay utilities before, except for the first school. And that was at the most 100 rmb a month for anything - water and electric.

if this is the outcome, i'd settle for that and consider it case closed. don't try to quibble to get it lower than it is now, i think you were fortunate to get this result.

I agree with the cleric. Pay the bill and be done with it. I pay electric and water where I am. At some schools people don't pay any utilities. As with everything here, things vary. The 550 doesn't sound too bad for a year.

I won't argue over 550 rmb and the other teachers accepted that the amount was not worth more discussion.

Go to the phone company and get a print out of the usage and bills. They have that and they can do that. That's how phone systems work. They keep records of calls and times and minutes, etc. THAT'S HOW THEY BILL!

If they can't/won't provide that to you (ie, the school is the customer and not you, so sorry, we cant provide that information) then somebody's fucking somebody and they're both fucking with you.

Good to see you mellow. The school has made an enormous concession to you.

Your 1500 telephone bill is another matter. You can really get a printout
from China Telecom.

Avoid any future questions/problems with your phone bill by signing up with Skype.
