An interesting article in the Prague Post online this week. Obviously, there will still be jobs for language teachers in the Czech Rep, but like the rest of Europe and the world, demand is shrinking for at least the short term.
I wouldn't say that newbies shouldn't still come to Prague - but I would expect salaries to continue to stagnate compared to cost of living. It's true all over...
This may be useful for would-be English teachers wondering what the prospects are for them in terms of what kinds of salaries to expect in this field.

Good post Spiral.
Ah, the Prague Post
Yes, it's true that demand for Business English classes is slightly down but demand for General English classes is stable and, as the article writes, demand for exam courses has seen an increase.
It would be wrong to state that the worldwide recession hasn't affected the EFL scene in Prague but it would also be wrong to suggest that the worldwide recession has had a strong influence on the EFL scene in Prague.
There is still teaching work in Prague.
If the article had appeared in Lidove Noviny for example then I would suggest taking serious notice
It is good though to bring people's attention to this and I wrote it was a 'good post' Spiral because you have taken the time to resource the article and publish it on this section of the forum.
Any language schools on here noticed a decline in business recently due to the worldwide recession?
Obama in Prague today btw!

The newbies who read this forum can't read Lidove Noviny (yet).
The Prague Post's views, and those of its contributers - in this case the spokesman for the Caledonian School (and my own views) are generally valid. Both me and the P.P. have been around for quite a few years. |

Hi Spiral.
Yes, I am aware that you spend your time between Holland and a small village close to Tabor (way out in the Czech countryside)
I also believe that my 14 years direct Prague experience helps in my objective contributions on these forum pages.
I was actually referring to my own opinion of the general content of the Prague Post
Although ITTP has featured in a Prague Post article in the past (online study resources), and although I was approached this week by the Prague Post to feature in the next issue of the Prague Post, I nonetheless have little time in general for the semi-tabloid media.
I thought this article was well-balanced though and I was curious to hear from other language schools to see if they had experienced any downturn in clients because of the worldwide recession.
It's officially Obama day today in Prague!

Yes, we have noticed a decline in business. I would say since Christmas our school has lost a total of eighty hours/month. In the same period we have also gained about 40-60 hours/month. I expect us to lose a bit more; and I expect us to gain a bit more. In this business that loss is rather significant, though not bankrupting.
The real test will be next September. That's when the business will be hit if it's going to be hit.
We do not expect to create any new jobs in the new year, and that's the first time that's happened in eight years.
However, native-speaking turnover rate is always fairly high, so jobs remain available in the Czech Republic. |

Hi johnnyappleseed.
Good feedback.
Yes, I agree with you that (unfortunately), teacher turnover is still very high.
If you are ever in Prague btw then feel free to send me an email and we can meet up if you have time.
Hezky den!

The Market does appear to be shrinking and that appears to be a normal product of the global economic crisis that is happening. There are still jobs out there. It's just harder to get them then it was even a few months ago. The last class we graduated has done pretty well, but it took more work on the school and students part. |

Hello there,
How can you realistically gauge your salary expectation, under these circumstances? (if you're a newbie who wants to teach English in Prague) |

I think you ought to make clear when asking salary related questions that you're not a native speaker. You'll get more accurate feedback. |

Why do you think briana isn't a native speaker? |
