Hey, I was just wondering about health checks. I'm applying with HESS and they have a health check requirement. What does that entail? And how healthy must you be?
I have asthma and ulcerative colitis (digestive issue in colon.) Anyhow, I'm 23 and otherwise healthy. But I don't know how strict they are. General advice, not just for Hess's requirements, is also appreciated.
thanks! |

I don't know about the Hess requirements specifically, but I feel like Asthma and digestive issues like ulcers are fairly common.
If they are looking for teachers in 100% perfect health they are going to have a hard time. *Everyone* has health problems of some sort. I feel like they may just want to make sure you don't have something like cancer or AIDS or something of that sort.
Just my opinion. |

I had to take the health test when I got here and it was pretty basic. They want to make sure your not bringing in any infectious diseases (hence the blood test), mainly aids and tb (hence the x-ray). |

Hi,
I knew I'd seen the list somewhere before, so went looking.... found this via a link from the MOFA website.
http://www.cdc.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=22462&ctNode=925&mp=5
Quote: |
Items Required for Health Certificate for Foreign Teachers
1. Chest X-Ray for Tuberculosis (Standard film only)
2. Serological Test for HIV Antibody
3. Serological Test for Syphilis
4. Proof of positive measles and rubella antibody titers or measles and rubella vaccination certificates (implemented on September 1, 2009 )
5. Physical Examination |
And here is the form:
http://www.cdc.gov.tw/public/Attachment/94112583071.pdf
I just noticed on this, there seems to be an upcoming change - point 4 on the above. Anyone know anything about that? Wonder if it applies to those of us already here, needing to do renewal health checks for each year's new ARC?

My ARC expires in May and I just had my health check last week. The measles/rubella antibody check was included. Also included was an increase in the price: Last year I paid NT$900 for the health check, this time it jumped to NT$2,000. |

So if you don't have the vaccine for these (I cannot remember) can you get one in-country, and then re-submit? |

Yes, I have heard that you just get it at the hospital where you do your medical check.
I have also heard that they only need you to take the shot if the "test" for this comes back "negative" for the "antibody titers" (as noted in point 4. of my earlier post). If it comes back "positive", you are fine (even if you don't have the certs). Not sure if this "test" thing is standard for all hospitals though - maybe different hospitals have different procedures?

I'm not sure about the schools, but regular health checks mandated by companies are pretty much the norm in Taiwan. They're relatively straight forward from my experience. I would image you'd have to have something rather serious to prevent a school employing you, if that's your concern.
Though a funny story: on my last relocation to Taiwan, I had to have a test for Leprosy. I tried to assure them that none of my body parts had fallen off anytime recently, but they required the blood test all the same.

You'll most likely need some sort of vaccinations before you arrive. Go to your local GP and explain you are moving to Taiwan. They should be able to recommend when injections you need.
