I have received a few offers of gifts and favors in he past few days since it is exam season. One student begged me in my office to pass him, minutes after finishing the final exam. I told him I will mark his paper and see how he did, and that I couldn't make any promises. We repeated this exchange at least 5 times. Then, just before leaving, he asked if I would like some Sidr honey from Yemen! (see http://www.worldsfoods.com/view.asp?prod_ID=2884 for some info on this rare expensive honey)

Another student was not so subtle... he actually plainly said to my face that if I pass him, he will get me a driving license with his father's connection without me having to take classes or even the test! He maybe apparently somehow knew that I don't have a license and that I am looking for wasta to get the license... cheeky little bugger!

Ah, the exception that proves the rule. Congratulations. But, on the other hand, as you likely know well, there have been teachers who painted themselves into corners by accepting "non-altruistic" wasta (the most common type.)

Ah yes.....

I remember way back when I was a young - OK, younger - lad - in my first job in KSA. I got an invite from a student and excitedly told a much more experienced colleague about how hospitable my students were. "Maybe so" he told me, "but remember that there's always something!"

I dismissed his words as cynicism. After all, what did he know. He'd only been there 5 years, as opposed to my 5 weeks. Soon enough, of course, I learned that he was quite right. There is indeed always (or almost always) something...

And then there was the "true believer" who tried to convince me that Saudis are the most generous people in the word. Smile
