I am considering traveling to Japan to search for work as an English teacher and I wanted to know what would be the best time to arrive in Japan this year?
I am aware that the best time for job openings would be Jan - March 2010 but I am also considering going back to university to do a postgraduate diploma of education and the academic year starts around that time. Presenting an obvious conflict.
Since I have little to do in the intervening time I was wondering if it would be worth while traveling this year and looking for employment and if my job search is unfruitful traveling back home for university in 2010.
In addition to my above question can anybody tell me what months the Japanese academic year is? |

Most schools in Japan have an academic year beginning in April (and obviously ending in March). International schools seem to begin more like their western counterparts (in September or August).
If you want to land a job from now to spring 2010, I'd say think again unless you are eligible for a working holiday visa. The vast majority of contracts are for 12 months. Yes, you can break them, but unless there are serious problems at work to justify it, I usually don't recommend doing so. |

Hate to be picky, but just wanted to point out that there are western countries where the school year does not begin in August- in the southern hemisphere the school year begins in early February and ends in November/December. Ok, as you were  |

To be honest, the jobs are few and far between here. It will most likely be unfruitful if you come here looking for a job. There are people on spouse visas with years of experience in Japan you'd be competing with right now. I'd advice you to look from home, and only come here for holiday purposes.
Plan on starting your postgrad studies.
Plus, as Glenski said, contracts are 'always' for at least a year. Unless you can commit, stay home. |
