|
|
I was wondering why schools are now asking for scans of the information page of applicant passports.
I used to believe that it was a simple way to get a look at the person who was applying, but several schools, which have online application packs, require a lot of passport information.
Is this used for screening purposes?
Perhaps it is used in order to gain CRB information.
Any ideas? |

These days, SAFEA requires electronic submission of your info as a pre-hire screening before accepting your hard copy documents. Much of the data is on your passport, (birth location, etc.).
Also, your passport shows your validity end date, which must be at least six months after your anticipated arrival date.
And yes, as always, it does provide a photo to prospective employers. |

This isn't a new thing. It's been done for years. It's to make sure that 1. You have the nationality you claim to have. 2. You have a valid passport. |

While I agree with what other posters have said I have stopped sending my passport photo page over the internet and taken it out of my computer. I also do not give them the passport photo page until I am well into the hiring process. There are just too many ID theft and data mining scams going on.
That said, I will send my passport photo, resume, references and cover letter.
Besides all the relevant information on your passport there are also security codes. The numbers at the bottom of my passport are easy to read up to a point they are: my zip code in reserve, graduation from high school date, birth date, then it says 2M (married twice), then there are sixteen numbers I can't tie anything to, followed by< and six more numbers I can't tie anything too. I am sure they must mean something in code, just like to ones that come before it.
Grant it that most employers are probably not interested in any kind of code on your passport, but I am very reluctant to send any document as proof positive for ID as a passport photo page "UPFRONT", without signing a contract first. |

Ah.... no. That's not the info the number/data sequence has. They all pretty much follow this format:

IMO, no employer really needs a copy of a passport page until they have agreed to hire them and must go through the visa application process. A regular photo and list of necessary info should suffice.
Perhaps some countries have more disreputable people applying than others...? |

Hi G,
I checked that out on wikipedia, the thing is my passport number is my zip code reversed- year I graduated - year I was born. the rest of the sequence is like it says in wiki until after the expiration date instead of 2 digits I have a whole string of them...also M is for male but why put an extra digit "2"before it, unless it means something. Don't get me wrong I use Wiki all the time but they don't know everything and neither do I, hah! |

really? that's werid that they did that for your passport. Is it just a coincidence, or is that how your country gives passport numbers? |

It might be that it's the way things are done in the country I am in. This is my third passport. I don't think it's coincidence. |

My passport number did change. The new zip code is in the foreign country where I now live. But I got the new passport here which makes it seem even less like a coincidence. |

I've saved my passports (4 in all) since the first one, issued in 1980. The passport number is different in each, but the wiki format is followed in each one.
But I don't have a "biometric passport"; my last one was issued in 2004 and the biometrics began being issued in 2007, I believe.
Regards,
John |

I got a new one in 2007 in Jan, but I didn-t get the biometric one, maybe because it wasn-t issued in the US? I mean, I got it in Peru. |
