I travel primarily because I want to see other places... but....
I live a better lifestyle on $14000 a year in Indonesia than I did on $56000 a year in Canada - and a big part of that is the huge chunk of my pay that disappeared in taxes.

Please don't feel badly for me...

Taxes are not why I left Canada--- when I lived there my income was usually so pitiful that I paid very little if any at all. In fact, being AWAY has caused me huge headaches due to taxes because of the complications and misunderstandings... and I've inexplicably paid more to Canada from abroad than I did whilst there. Here in Turkey I pay 25% to the Turks and still owe Canada.

HOWEVER, I can live really comfortably on 700 cdn dollars a month here. I can save half my income without really thinking about it. Try to do that at home. ha.

My reason for travelling is that I love to travel. I left when I was 19 and have kept on leaving ever since. I returned a few times for school, and also in my mid 20sbecause I thought I wanted to settle down and have a normal life. I lasted 6 months before I started to seriously get out.

A small point.

In Canada when a city is booming it is difficult to live in...A couple of years ago in Calgary there were stories of the "working homeless'" -people making decent money living in shelters waiting for am apartment or room to rent...There is always work in Toronto but rent is outlandish. Even in the boonies...In Montreal rent is cheap and the livin is good but try finding a job...Even poor Halifax has high rent...Officially the employment rate is pretty good I hear but it's still tough to live...

Reason I am here is to smoke cigarettes.. I hear they have introduced the death penalty for smoking in public. Wink

Hell, try finding an apartment. The vacancy rate has dropped to below half a percent here and the rental rates have jumped (though not on par with T.O.).

I'm still in the bedsit I arranged online before arriving. I've been so disgusted over the discrepancy between earnings and living costs that I had one foot out the door to return to Europe. Suddenly, a pipeline of corporate private students appeared so we'll see what happens next. I can't straddle the Atlantic forever.

It HAS been a decade since I spent time there...Too bad really...Had heard the economy improved and maybe that did in the incredibly cheap rent...

Good point ntrophy. When I called mom from Australia at Chinese New Year, sweltering in 38 degree heat, she mentioned that in Moose Jaw it was -55 degrees. Must admit that I would HATE to have been there for that one....heard this winter was one of the worst.

Not that HK summers with the excessive heat and humidity are any better, but I would rather be sweating than freezing to death.

Well, Paul Martin TALKS about lowering taxes and reducing government waste. Just hope he walks it like he talks it.

Personally, I don't mind the winters, and I'm a guy who lived in California for 3 years.

What about life in Oz compared to Canada? Can anyone (Foster?) comment on that? What are Australian women like?

I never lived in OZ...just visited. Never checked out the ladies either, being that I am a girl....but the ones I met were wonderful. I did find that they were much like Canadian girls, out spoken, opinionated, easy-going, good tempered and fun. A lot of vegetarians/vegans in OZ I found.

In so many ways, I found OZ to be alot like Canada in attitude, price, taxes, people etc...

I would seriously consider retiring there.

I toured around on a motorcycle for about a month there. Great country to visit; I wouldn't mind working there, but I gather that the ESL market is in poor shape.

And the women are pretty nice too... Wink

Yeah, I doubt the ESL market is booming there, but I heard they are hurting for high school teachers, such as maths and sciences.
