Hello,
Just got this offer at KFU in Jeddah: 17,500 a month + 25,000 a year housing allowance + 12,000 1-time furniture allowance + insurance and RT ticket
ESL or language courses, 14 hours a week of teaching maximum
My profile: PhD, 19 years teaching, 6 years in the Middle East, American.
Has anyone heard of the institution? |

Well, KFU is not in Jeddah, it is in Al-Ahsaa (North East of KSA).
Their web site is: http://www.kfu.edu.sa/en/AboutUs/pages/home.aspx
I guess they have new branches in Riyadh and Dammam.
Was the job offer at Asscociate Prof level?
I guess the above salary is for Associate Prof in the medium range.
The 25000 housing allowances is for Assistant/Asst prof scale.
The 14 teaching hours/week is the max for Assistant prof not Associate prof!
With your credentials, and holding Uncle Sam passport, you should try to negotiate and ask them to increase the salary.

I just realized KFU is indeed in Dammam.
I managed to push their offer up from 15 to 17.5, however I am worried that the housing allowance is not enough to get a decent place.
The person hiring kept telling me that life in KSA is cheaper than Dubai but I am not sure I can trust him on that assessment. |

Well, he is right, life in Dubai, especially renting, is more expensive than the Magic Kingdom. If you want cheap life, then go for KFU. |

25K as housing allowance would be enough to rent a decent place? I would not have to add some of my own money?
Also, being a middle-aged single woman, would my life be ghastly in the Magic Kingdom? I know I cannot drive there but what about the rest such as eat out, shop etc? |

KFU has a campus in Hassa (Al-Ahsa) and another one in Dammam. Which one ? |

Well, since you are single, I think 25k is more than enough to rent a decent small furnished flat/house.
Concerning restaurants and shops, I think there will be no shortage for you, especially in Dammam. |

Damman is not the most 'glamorous' part of KSA so I think 25K would easily cover a decent 2 bed apartment. However, compounds are much more expensive, so if you wanted to live there, you would almost certainly have to shell out some of your own cash.

It really depends on you. If you are adaptable, resourceful and have reasonable expectations, you should do fine. Plenty of single women of all ages come here and live to tell the tale! |

They have now upped the salary to 20K That's a bit better!
I am quite determined and adaptable! |

25,000 as a housing allowance is pretty good. It can get you a decent 2 or even 3-bedroom apartment. But if I were you (single woman), I would shell out 1,000-1,500 per month from my salary and add it to the 25,000 and get a 1-bedroom apartment in a compound with facilities such as swimming pools, minimarket, gym, restaurant, tennis/squash/badminton courts, table tennis, billiards, etc. Not to mention, nice clean streets, and lots of foliage. |
