Sorry for the delay on this story but it is taking a while for hard copies of the SCMP to be sent through to me. Anyway, it is interesting to read that in an article entitled "Ombudsman slams staff for mistakes in exams" (Daniel Sin, 03.06.09, p.C1), we learn that "after a year-long investigation into a spate of errors in exam papers" in 2008, the Ombudsman has criticised those at the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority involved in the preparation of the exams for being "careless" for allowing errors in the scripts of the English and Physics A levels and the English HKCEE to pass undetected through "two rounds of assessments" and no fewer than "eight to nine rounds of proof-reading."
It seems then that editors in the employ of the government are not only vastly overpaid but are also highly incompetent. This is not surprising, of course. After all, I guess most editors were too busy thinking about their HK$150,000 summer holidays to conduct proper copy editing of the pesky exams. I feel sorry for the students in HK, though. I wonder how they would react if they knew who was preparing the exams, the results of which largely determine their future? |
