this summer is costing over 150K so far, not including spending money |
Jings, I nearly choked on me haggis when I read that! We got Air Asia flights to London for HK$4500. Then are going camping...
Reminds me of another thread - maybe me and 'er should get ourselves a room in Chungking after all - save a bit o' cash.
Regards posting - bye fer a while. On a long weekend now. So will resist the urge to see what nonsense you know who will be writing. |

People here are posting some quite high figures indeed, and yet, irresponsibly perhaps, still nevertheless encourage people to come here and work (read, 'become a slave') at hack tutorial centres for a paltry HK$20,000 a month, i.e., vastly less than their set monthly outgoings. ("Yeah! Come to HK! You'll be fine on HK$20,000! Oh, by the way, my wife and I have outgoings of more than HK35,000/HK$40,000 a month to lead the lifestyle we desire though....")
It's also interesting that those who defend HK and tell people the place is fine have the sheer audacity to then go on to brag about spending in excess of HK30,000 a month month in, month out and forking out some HK$150,000, just for a summer holiday. It seems to me that editors are vastly overpaid. I think this needs to be brought to the attention of the relevant body.
Give me HK$150,000 for a summer and I'll say HK is great, too. |

... the usual off-topic and snide remarks from the returnee, though he omits to reveal anything of his own income or expenses. High figures indeed? Not really - and certainly not when compared to most expat packages.
For what it's worth, when I came to HK I was on about 15K a month, and in fact never averaged much more than 20K a month during my first seven years here. Not everyone can expect to come here and start on a big salary from the get-go. And it ought to be pointed out that those without full quals will probably never make big money here. But, and this is something TR/Bogey obviously can't stomach, there are plenty of people who like living in HK irregardless of salary.

Yes, very expensive and certainly not a normal summer hol - family stuff. Not a five-star hotel world tour, unfortunately. Generally, I imagine that holiday choices have a huge impact on saving ability - especially if (as some teachers do) you have lots of vacation time. |

I presume he meant US$38000 by the end of his contract which would have been two years. |
No I meant saving US$38,000 a year. My apartment (I live on the mainland, not HK) is 9,000 a month but that's paid for by my employer as part of my contract, I get about 12,000 for travel expenses and my health cover is also part of my contract. Apart from utilities and food I don't have any other expenses and I live frugally. Thanks for the feedback and information everyone. |

What does 'irregardless' mean, pray tell? Is that some form of low-class blend of 'irrespective' and 'regardless' by any chance? |

There was a pedant (among other things) who used to frequent the forum, name of Bogey or somesuch, but he was banned for posting insulting and irrelevant remarks, as well as complete nonsense. I wonder what happened to him? Anyway, it turns out you almost guess correctly, TR! (but humorous, not low-class - tut tut.)
From the Oxford Compact: irregardless adverb: regardless; a combination of irrespective and regardless sometimes used humorously. |

Yes, I know, but there was nothing humorous about your employment of that particular lexical item, save for your ignorance of its normal (mistaken) use.
It is also quite interesting that you should accuse someone of being a pendant. Hmm, let me see now, just looking through some of your posts..Oh yes! Pedantic is the very word that immediately springs to mind! |

I think you will find that the forum's rules expressly forbid personal attacks. |

Well, since the two of you can't seem to heed warnings both in the thread and pm's, the thread is now locked.
With that, the consequences you were both told about in your warning pm's would happen if you continued will be awaiting you when you attempt to login.
It's really simple: Come here and contribute to the forums in a civil manner and you're welcome. Antagonize others and ignore the warnings and you'll be no longer welcome. [/b] |
