SKYPE interview huh! Wake up and smell the coffee.

A good institution would at least run a phone or a video-conference interview.

In terms of salary expectation, just refer to the SKYPE interview mode and figure out.

I don't see that using Skype is a negative point. It's just another method of real-time communication. I guess it also shows that you are familiar with at least one form of technology and language learning!

Totally in agreement with you Umzakaria. Many very respectable institutions now choose this mode of communication to conduct interviews. It is convenient, free and less of a hassle to organize.

Now IAT didn't have the best reputation last time I heard: best to check some threads on Dave's before joining...

Conducting interviews through SKYPE is not a bad idea but a clear indicator that if successful, the package won't be great. I think it is common sense folks.

Question Question Question

Being interviewed from the comfort of one's own living room via Skype (cam and audio incl. of course) is totally superior Cool to a normal phone interview or a video conference at an intimidating 5* hotel Rolling Eyes.

...gotta agree with the "intimidating" thing here at a 5* hotel, Pik...I interviewed for and accepted a position with the ADEC, and while the interview and surrounds were just fine and very professional, it was a bit of a "thing" walking into a hotel suite with two people sitting there I did not know...however, being "suited up" and "edgy" also put me a bit more on my game than I maybe would have been in the comfort of my own living room...wild business, this...!!! Cool

Couldn't agree more, wintermute2. Just before a Skype interview the other day, I tested the connection and all with a friend. It was early morning and the living room light was on. She said the light made this halo around my head and it looked like I'd just had a very good idea Laughing. (This wasn't good of course.) Throughout the interview later on, I kept on wondering whether the interviewers also saw the bright spark I'd just had Very Happy. So yeah, the professional surrounds of the 5* hotel can definitely work to your advantage. Not to mention the suit and the edge Wink.

...revelation, indeed!!! ...(no blasphemy intended!!!...)...though I am sure, Pik, that you have many good ideas...thanks for the kind words, and I am hopeful that where you are allows you to share those "halo" moments effectively and with good "reception"!

Wonder if etisalat knows that IAT uses Skype to interview?

I think that's kind of funny.

HCT and ZU both use video conferencing --- and pay for the remote location.

uaeobserver - my sentiments exactly! I've been watching this discussion and have been most amused as the OP would have no idea that SKYPE is actually illegal in the UAE. But then as the education arm of the military, I guess IAT can do what it darned well pleases!

Interviewing someone by using SKYPE is definitely an excellent lead that the institution is CHEAP. Thus, interviewees should not expect attractive offers thereafter.

If they cannot spend money on a phone or video-conference interview, then what do you expect if successful? Common sense folks.

P.S: Do not forget that IAT is a governmental institution and the HR has a 'FAT' budget.

Not so. IAT replaced the old technical schools. They are secondary schools and many of their students continue to the HCTs.

I don't see the use of Skype as an indication of the cheapness of the employer, but the fact that it is not supposed to be legal in the UAE makes it rather funny.

Some people have reported to me that their supposedly expensive video conferences were a nightmare of glitches and misunderstandings because of lousy connections... and this is with the supposed top employers.

If that is the situation and both parties have good stable high speed internet, Skype can do the job just fine.

...yep...whatever works, under the circumstances...and, by the by, do I understand correctly that Skype will work if I load it here before going there, but I would not be able to download it once in the UAE?...details, details... Cool
