Does anyone have experience with chinateachonline.com? Good? Bad?

I am interested in teaching in China for fall 2008, and this seems to be a good resource.

Can anyone recommend any other (free hopefully) resources?

Great, thanks!

They seem to be offering goverment school jobs and everything seems to be in order. The SAFEA contract but by law has to be an original copy for SAFEA to honor it so a copy is not legal. However most of us end up with copies so is life. I see no warning bells with this lot. Oh, it is normal with many goverment and University jobs to end up being offered a 10 month contract where by you don't get paid for the Summer holidays and they are offering these jobs along with 12 month contracts. This doesn't make them bad as it is just what is on offer at many places.

Just make sure what they offer and what they give are the same things!!!!!!!!!!!
It's an old trick in the China EFL game to offer reasonable benefits - the bait - for these to be suddenly changed for less beneficial terms as you get to sign a contract - the switch. A classic example of this is the offered wage - for those job advertisements that contain figures regarding expected salaries on a min and max scale. At the beginning the talk may well be about the wage at the top end, but when your recruiters feel you have decided to take the job and will be reluctant to pull back - suddenly that minimum wage pops up together with excuses that the employer can't pay you any more.
Remember even though a teaching job may be in the public sector - most of these positions are also evolved with the main focus on profit rather than education Idea

Um, I work for the government here and they are no better or worse than the private sector in any way. So take your pick so to speak!

Anda, thanks for your help.

The company (chinateachonline.com) claims to have placed lots of teachers, yet I can't find a single review good OR bad anywhere.

Still, it's good to have your more informed ideas!

Has anyone actually worked with this company?

Chinese recruiting often claims a lot of stuff - the bait. Never take any job before getting in touch with a FT's who've have the real dope on any service/job you're thinking of taking up!!!!!!!!!!
As for this -

There are so many differences between the private and public type EFL job that it warrants a thread in itself. But we've touched on one of the biggest - holidays. Public schools observe long school holidays while the private sector just has the short national holiday plan with maybe an extra week thrown in during a quiet period. Of course the scope for earning higher wages is greater with privates - but if you sign a a 12 month contract with these places then you're going to be working for 12 months (no multi-week periods in the summer or winter).

their website looks ok and its rather professional looking. however as vikuk notes, caution is always in order when looking at recruiters.

vikuk notes a lot on our forums...and it's not about "caution" in his case Wink

anda's mentioned some good points above and it's quite common for some employers to offer those copies of SAFEA contracts instead of originals and then that length of contract and pay with it..i agree with anda..something to watch out for

the site looks pro to me too, although it's not the site that'll be your employer

cheers and beers to the uk vik
