Hi,
I am new to Dave's and this forum. I am wondering if you guys can help me with this question or point me to where I might find the answer on the forum.
I have a BA in EngLit and a TESOL Cert. My husband is in the MEd + TESOL program now. When he finishes we would like to find jobs in Saudi Arabia- Riyadh or Jeddah. Although everyone seems to be looking for teaching couples, I am a little skeptical that they might use that as an opportunity to give us as a couple less than we would get teaching separately at different institutions. Obviously we would share housing, I'm talking more about salary, especially because I know some places pay women less than men. Is working for the same institution the best way to go, separate institutions, or maybe even going on his iqamah and private tutoring when I get there (upwards of 100SR per hour)?

| I don't know what option is best for you, but with private tutoring you can easily get SR. 200/hour, which is the standard going rate. Some people charge 175, and some 225, or even 250. If you are a native speaker of English, you will get hundreds of phone calls within days of placing free ads in the two English language dailies (happened to my friend). |

They cannot pay you less than the standard base salary, regardless of where your spouse is working. The only way your employer would save is by having you share housing, which of course you would be doing anyway as a married couple. Even if you were to get a job at another institution, chances are you will not be paid benefits such as housing, flights and health insurance, because your husband's employer will already be paying for this.

I keep reading about this on Dave's, yet everywhere I've worked, men and women have earned exactly the same.

I would assume you'll be on his igama no matter where you end up working?
Regarding private teaching, there's no problem finding students. Finding good, reliable students is, however, another matter. If you're lucky, you can make a pretty good income just by tutoring alone, and if this works out it might be a good solution for you, since your husband's employer will be covering housing etc. However, I know several people who have given up taking private students because students messed them around so much by canceling at the last minute, wanting to change times every other week, 'renegotiating' agreed fees, delaying in paying up at the end of the month and so on. There are some reliable, decent students out there, and if you can find them that's great, but they take some searching out. |

| Just be sure to get a contract BEFORE you arrive in Saudi Arabia. If your husband is hired first, and then you are hired once you are in the Kingdom, many institutions will treat you as a "local hire" with a much lower salary and no benefits at all. |
