There is a rather shocking case that happened in one of the colleges, where even with independent witnesses (local and foreign) the foreigner was not supported by their employer and police got involved - on behalf of the local Omani! (surprised?! ) [/quote]
Could you say, which college? Cause I got an offer from Dhofar University.
I am about to move to Oman too and my driving skills suck.
I am really scared by this post. What should I do? |

Metaval,
Such stories are legend and have become part of the expat lore...urban legend type of thing. Of course there is truth somewhere in the legend but has taken on mythical stature in all the retellings.
Tell me are you afraid of most things where you live now? |

1 - Truth does not constitute expat lore.
2 - It was not Dhofar uni. |

Well, I'm not afraid, cause I know where I am and what to expect. |

Dear metalval,
" . . . I know where I am and what to expect."
which is at least in part why many of us got into EFL - that was so darn boring.

Dear metalval,
More in retrospect than when they're actually happening - then I'm usually scared witless.

"I don't go down just because the guy touched me... I mean, I'm not a woman !"
Reality check here: Am I the only one who finds that quote remarkable offensive? |

Dear desultude,
Most places, yes - it'd be remarkably sexist/offensive. In the Middle East, however, it's practically a compliment.
Regards,
John
P.S. Yup, I'm hyperbolizing. |

Just a quick update on the progress of my friend's case - she was acquitted towards the end of July after at least 4 appearances in court,
and was finally able to go back home for what remained of her holiday.
Alhamdulilah. Justice and common sense sometimes prevail.
Thanks everyone for your stories. |

To the credit of their judicial system, it usually does. The problem is having the tenacity (and resources) to take it all the way.
Glad to hear that she won out in the end.
