Dear ELT Professional
I am writing to invite you to a workshop on Inspiring Students to Read So they Do Not �Fall through the Cracks,� delivered by guest speakers, Sarah Peoples Perry and Marilyn S. Taylor. This workshop has been arranged with the kind assistance of Tom Le Seelleur from Khalifa University and will be held at the British Council Dubai in Academic City on Monday 22 June from 10:00 � 12:00. Refreshments will be provided.
The workshop is primarily aimed at English teachers working in grades K-9 in the school sector.
If you are interested in attending this workshop, you will first need to register as there are limited places available. To register contact [email protected]. The workshop is free and all participants will receive a certificate of attendance. |

The second half of the question is the hardest.
When I know I'll have to sit and wait - at the Dr, at the dentist etc - I expect there to be reading matter in the waiting area; but I usually take something of my own. When my children were little I always took an appropriate book with me if I thought we'd have to wait somewhere or for bus or train journeys.
Think folks - how often do you see people reading while they wait here, or looking at books with children in waiiting areas. It was all very well the Sheikh in Sharjah giving sets of books to families to encourage literacy (a news item from a few months ago) but what is really needed is a fundamental change in the attitude to books: books are for fun, reading is an essential part of daily life - not just for study. It's the parents who need to inculcate this love for books in their children. However much children learn to love books in school they won't be able to carry on reading without parental support, to take them to bookshops and to read with them; and parental pressure, to encourage schools both private and public to have proper school libraries.[/b] |

...here, here, Iamherebecause!!!...as adults (parents, teachers, guardians) we need to set the example and set the expectation...it will not happen by osmosis or putting the books under their pillows at night...love the concept of reading while wating for appointments!...  ...excellent question with no firm answer, but some fairly easy ways to accomplish the goal...if only we all will actually employ them!  |

Hi to all,
I thought to use this thread to ask about libraries in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi rather than start a new thread. Is anyone aware of a good library in either city with a good volume of books for beginning to intermediate (proficiency level) second language learners?

Hi
If I am wrong can HCT put me right. As far as I know, any Joe/Jane/Ahmed/Fatima Doe can join any HCT library (membership) and borrow their books and resources.

For all professionals looking for ideas to encourage teachers to promote reading then one excellent resource from the UK is 'Teachers TV'. This covers K-12 and therefore our university level students, who in terms of reading, fall within these levels.
Through the Readingforlife website follow the links. It is all free and goldust for teacher training and showing that it is possible.

I've been reading this thread...forever...without comment. It seems that no one has remarked on the need of world knowledge! I catch these kids right out of high school and am forced to drag them through the likes of Cutting Edge which presumes that they have a modicum of knowledge of the world around them...which they don't....unless the world around them exclusively contains Michael Jackson or Arnold Schwarzenegger.
When is ADEC going to introduce them to the outside world?
