Hey guys! I have a few questions about moving to Hong Kong. I've searched around on this board, found some good information. I think all that is left are the following:
1. When I get there - where is a decent place to stay while I look for an apartment? I'm a little nervous about this part because I'll be all by myself (late 20s, female).
2. Where are the good places to live? I've heard Causeway Bay, but would like to know some other suggestions (if any).
3. What websites would you suggest for job searching?
4. What websites would you suggest for finding things to do in Hong Kong, such as martial arts lessons and/or running groups?
I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you very much for your help! |

Hello.
1. When I get there - where is a decent place to stay while I look for an apartment? I'm a little nervous about this part because I'll be all by myself (late 20s, female).
Sorry, not really sure. Maybe someone else has a better idea.
2. Where are the good places to live? I've heard Causeway Bay, but would like to know some other suggestions (if any).
If you like busy/city life: Causeway Bay, Mid-Levels
If you like quiet life: Discovery Bay, Tung Chung (affordable), Sai Kung
If you like very quiet life: Mui Wo, Pui O
If you have money and like beaches: Clearwater Bay, Shek O
3. What websites would you suggest for job searching?
South China Morning Post
4. What websites would you suggest for finding things to do in Hong Kong, such as martial arts lessons and/or running groups?
www.geoexpat.com
www.asiaxpat.com
My answers aren't very comprehensive, and I'm sure other people have more ideas/different opinions.
Good luck,
Nick |

And for something a bit different to any of the above, take a look at Lamma island: http://lamma.com.hk/ |

Marco - that's a great website! I'll definitely visit there.
River - thank you - I'll look into the hostel.
Has anyone ever heard of Urban Cube apartments in Causeway Bay? Any opinions on that?

I am also planing to move to HK to find work. Arrive on a tourist visa then find a job that will sponsor my work visa. Can anyone living in HK tell me how the job prospects look for teaching English? I plan on moving in August 09. |

As far as I know, technically it's illegal to look for a job on a tourist visa - but plenty people do. There are plenty of jobs around - but comparatively low paid. The ones with more money usually need a bit more research and application in advance, eg. EDB NET, International schools. I'd worry about having enough money to get by without a job in Hong Kong - it's not particularly cheap.
As said above, geo and asia expat are good for tips.
For martial arts, google Impakt, Kontact, The Ring. They're in Central and mainly do kickboxing. There are lots in Kowloon, but not so often on the internet.
For temporary accommodation, I'd add:-
http://rentaroomhk.com/
www.cozy.com.hk
www.cityloft.com.hk
www.studiostudio.com.hk
I saw rooms with cozy - they were small, clean, fine, about 6K a month in Causeway Bay. I used rentaroom in Jordan, similar, 8K, more convenient for me at the time. People have also discussed Chungking Mansion here - it's more budget, but really cramped. |
