|
|
Hi,
Can anyone recommend a TEFL//TESOL 4 week course in Cambodia that includes Teaching practice and gives a good certificate?
I have seen a couple on CactusTEFL but they seem to be identical to the LanguageCorps/World TEFL School and maybe not any good?
thanks

Pirate,
That course does look excellent. Have you started yet? In your opinion, will the certificate be useful throughout Asia, or might it limit you to Cambodia?
I would appreciate any tips and advice about this course. What are the trainers like? Do they help you find a job? What is the employment-climate like in Pnom Pehnh at present? Do you intend to work in Cambodia? If so, what kind of school? |

Well, as I want a certificate course recognized worldwide, I've decided to take the CELTA in Saigon...
Trinity CerTESOL would be great but there are no course providers in SE Asia...
so I'll try to get a CELTA then teach in Cambodia or Laos if Vietnam won't let me...
regards

Did you research demonstrated that CELTA has a better global recognition? So you chose to study in Saigon because Vietnam is your first choice as a place to work?
From the basic research I've done, the International House course in Chiang Mai/BKK seems pretty strong.
Was it the lack of CELTA that put you off Cambodia? |

Yes, if you ask any reputable school in Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong... they will say CELTA or Trinity CerTESOL

Well, I study in Saigon as I wantg a CELTA and don't want to study in Thailand or China...
I may not be able to work in Vietnam as I do not have a 3 year BA ... so I'll probably take the course then if I cannot work legally in 'Nam, move to Cambodia or Laos ...

Yes, IH have a very good rep worldwide... 300 + schools ...

Well, the lack of any true internanionally recognized certificate (whether CELTA or Trinity CerTESOL) ...
BTW - the CamTEFL.org might be very good, but I've not seen anything about western university accreditation ... so I'm gonna play it safe with my money and try the CELTA in 'Nam
HTH

Very helpful, thanks. One more question:
Did you consider doing a CELTA in the UK before going to Asia? Seems like a good option to me. There is a good course here in Manchester that seems to have a good reputation. Perhaps, if I'm unsure of where to work, I should obtain a CELTA in England before leaving? |

yes... then you can apply for jobs anywhere...and the school that ultimately employs you might give you a free flight! |

Manchester is a good option for me. It would keep my cost to a minimum. Also, I feel comfortable there, so I can get straight down to business and make the most of the course. Once I had the CELTA, then it'd be time to make tracks and discover new worlds.
When does your course start? Are you hoping to get a job through the course, or will you perhaps move town after the course finishes?
Free flight sounds good, but so much I've read states that it's better to get jobs in-country, else you're laying yourself open to all kinds of abuse. Do schools is Vietnam sometimes pay for flights? Are you there at present? |

Hi just to add my voice to the discussion I was also on the May 09 CamTEFL and can concur about the high quality of training on offer on this course. Also the course recently gained accreditation by the College of Teachers in the UK.. a well respected CELTA/Trinity equiv. Money very well spent in my mind for what its worth! |
