Hi
This is for a friend of mine - No seriously it is!! 
He is going to Oman to work ( not in teaching) and wonders about the internet connection - is it reliable? He didn't know who to ask so I said that the good folks at Dave's would be happy to help.

Short answer---yes
Long answer - it varies on location. Muscat is fine while some of the villages have 'slow service'. Depending on where you are service varies from really good to 'spotty at best'. When he gets to Oman he can shop around for a provider. Nawras and Omantel are the biggest and may be the only?
Wifi is very common so you get the usual 'coffee shop hangers out, surfing and chatting and coffeeing' |

| I'm bringing a laptop to Oman. I have heard there is alot of "garbage" on the internet lines (viruses, bugs that clog-up memory, etc.). Does anybody know of good software I can load on my laptop (Windows Professional/Home Edition) that would prevent this "garbage" from entering my programs? |

A home internet connection works through a small Omantel or Nawras portable modem.
You can purchase the modem at a sales desk in any shopping mall. They cost approximately 50 Omani rial. You need a work visa to buy one.
You also need a sim card to use with the modem, which you use to transfer credit to a 48 hour internet option. Internet use by this method costs 2 rials per 48 hours, so a rial a day. You can buy the top up cards in most shops and petrol stations.
The connection is quite fast and viruses don't seem to be a problem. If you download the free home version of Avast anti - virus that should locate any problems. |

It is the same garbage which clogs the internet everywhere... not really anything to do with Oman. It is up to you to have the proper programs to protect you. And you don't need to spend money to get good protection. Got to http://www.filehippo.com/
I use Ad Award, Spyware Blaster, and AVG. Also if you have XP, Zone Alarm is good. (it isn't necessary with Vista) I am no computer guru, but these are the programs that my computer guru *insists* are the best. (I must ask him about Avast... seems to have passed AVG in popularity at filehippo... which is where the gurus go for programs)

| Is there any reason why the portable modem purchased anywhere would not work if a person bought a new, Oman keyed SIM card? |
