I have a TESOL teaching certificate but no college or university degree and 3.5 years experience teaching English in China at mostly colleges and training schools and have taught all ages. Could I work in Japan? I prefer to teach adults-18 & over. |

Probably. If those 3.5 years are total time of full-time work, you don't need the college degree in order to get a work visa (probably only the specialist in humanities/international relations work visa). What is your nationality, and how much of your own education (all subjects) was presented only in English? You'll need at lease 12 years if you want to get an instructor visa (for ALT work or direct hire in the public school system).
As a student visa holder or cultural activities visa holder, you don't need a degree, either. You just have to get special permission to do work. It will only allow part-time jobs, but better than nothing.

The rules asy yes you can do it if you have enough experience but the problem sometimes happens when the employers ask for a degree to get the visa. Many employers just say they wnat to have teachers who have got degrees and I think they do it to cut donw on the hassle of having to sponsor visas for people with no degeree so it means you might not have a chance to be very choosy about where you go so I wouldn't tell them straight away that you want ot teach only adults who are aged 18 + but also make it seem liek you will teach anyone because if the employer thinks that it is a bit of a hassle to check up your experience and then prove it to immigartion then they might also think that if you only want to tteach adults then it could be one more extra problem that isn't worh thtier time. But I think you can do it good luck!!!! |
