Gosh, I knew the Euro was strong, but how long should he chill out on his 5000 plus interest? |

I couldn't say exactly, but living cost are very low in Indochina compared with Europe. These days I suppose Laos, Cambodia or rural Thailand is a better (cheaper) bet than Bangkok. A few US dollars equivalent will get one a room for a night, a weeek, a month... Food and drink are cheap. Even female companionship - but that would be up to our boy, if he's into all that. None of my business! |

Don't listen to Voltaire for god's sake whatever you do. He's talking out of his arse quite frankly.
If you tried to do what he suggested you'd have a crap, uncomfortable lifestyle. You'd probably be living somewhere with no air-con for a start which would be a nightmare in Thailand. You'd be doing a very very poorly paid job too. You probably couldn't afford health insurance....etc etc.
You've got the right idea doing the CELTA and doing plenty of research on where you want to go mate. TESOL is like any other industry, you reap the rewards from working hard and taking it seriously. Get qualified and you can get up the payscale quickly.
Until you have the experience and quals to be applying for Director of Studies jobs etc the only places you can make any decent money are eastern Asia (Japan Korea Hong Kong) and the Middle East.
However, once you get to a certain level you can apply for well paid DOS/Senior positions anywhere.
Then you can obtain the holy grail, (as far as many male ESL teachers are concerned) which is a well paid job in an Indochinese or Latin American country with great weather loads of attractive and available women around!!!! |

Many foreign language teachers in Japan can't afford health insurance. After the first year it becomes very expensive, and if you 'skip' a year (because you can't afford it) then the next year, you'll have to pay two years (one for the current year and one for the year that passed in which you didn't have health insurance). And yet they are going to pin it to visa renewal. |

Which century is Voltaire living in?
For the record, foreigners don't get interest from Thai bank accounts. |

| Entertaining thread. To the OP: If you want specific advice on living and working in Colombia, pm me or reply to this thread. You can definitely live okay here, but it's not an easy country to get started in ESL. As a beginner teacher, I would never come to Colombia primarily for teaching. Personally I'm here for the Spanish, but that's difficult to keep up with as a busy always speaking English English teacher. |
