I have potentially been offered a contract to teach with EF Indonesia in Makassar, I was wondering if anybody can give me some of their impressions of working with the organization and or working in this city. The wage is not high which is fine, but I also do not want to be working all the time. I am looking to be able to enjoy life, play sports, go out, swim, enjoy some greenery and slow pace lifestyle etc- am I going to the wrong location?
Any experience here would be helpful

THe school there is fairly new isn't it? Hence maybe no one with experience yet... I noticed an ad for this one and was interested. I won;t be ready to apply for anywhere till next year though. Loving Indonesia though so definitely want to come back to teach here when I've finished my degree.

Never been to Sulawesi myself but haven't heard any good reports about Makassar. It seems to be a transit stop on the way to Manado which is the main attraction up that way.

EF Makassar has been in business for some years now. Haven't heard anything about them for a while - and no news is usually good news on a forum like this - but in the past they got a little flack for insisting FTs take their holiday entitlement at the end of the contract. At that time the shared accomodation was sans a/c too, but maybe that has changed by now.

Makassar itself is difficult to fall in love with, though there are good travel opportunities to Toraja (if you have any holidays - see above). A friend of mine who worked there said the people are among the rudest in Indonesia.

Hey, I also potentially have the opportunity to work at the EF Makassar school. Did you end up taking the position? If so, what's it like?

Like you I'm looking for somewhere that is well-located for weekend trips, as I love the outdoors, but also somewhere that isn't too big/polluted and has at least some nightlife. I know, a lot to ask! Can anyone recommend somewhere that may fit the bill? Do you think Makassar would offer any of this?

Thanks in advance,

James

Hmm ok. I've had a look at the contract and it isn't great (the holiday thing seems not to have changed - you have to take 10 out of the 15 days immediately before the end of the contract, although the DoS has said if they can find cover they may allow you to take more during the contract). I may be able to put up with that if Makassar is worth it though... but from some of the posts on here I'm not sure if it's what I'm looking for. Any other comments about Makassar?

I can't fathom why they are so intransigent about modifying this contract clause. It has earned them bad publicity in the past and it is hardly rocket science to organise a leave roster. Other EF schools seem to manage it.
