I am married and was thinking of applying to BAE in KSA, but have heard that it can take a long time to bring your family over and that you will initially have to share accommodation. Does anyone who has worked or is working there know anything about this? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Mr. TEFL,
Can I just say that when you apply to BAE you don't really apply for a job in Riyadh as that's where the officers are mostly trained and that kind of teaching gig happens when you are bumped up or promoted so you wouldn't get to go there straight away. More likely, you'd be put in Dharhan which is quite another place altogether.
For BAE you normally get 10 weeks a year holiday.

Play golf as much as you can when you arrive. A lot of things can be sorted out on a golf course ! |

| Before applying, be sure that you have an appreciation for the TV show "Welcome Back, Kotter" and an exceptional sense of humor. KFAA requires both. |

Have you done a search on the forum? You'll find some information about BAE (including some from me that I posted this past summer--I didn't work for them, but I was exposed to them through their subsidiary, SDT).
I second sugardaddy22's comment. Do you want to bring your kids up in that God-forsaken place? |

| My eldest daughter is very nostalgic about her time in Jeddah. For younger children it CAN be a positive experience - if you have good housing on a Western compound and they go to a good school. |

Hello Mr Tefl
I work for BAE Systems in Riyadh. I have been with the company for over 2 years and am happy with my job and living conditions. I am single and live alone in a very nice 2 bedroom apartment on the main BAE compound. The compound has been full for about a year now and this was the main reason that a number of people had to share when they first arrived. However the company has just taken over a new compound (Palm Court) which consists wholly of family villas and so waiting times for bringing wives and kids over have been cut to well under a year ... sometimes to about 6 or 7 months. I know a few people who have brought their families over at their own expense to live with them in a 2 bedroom apartment while they are waiting for a villa to be assigned.
If you have an MA, there is no problem in stipulating in your job interview that you want to work in Riyadh and not Dhahran. The salary is still quite high .. I get about a thousand pounds a week plus free fully furnished accommodation, free utilities, 3 airline tickets a year, free laundry, free gym + leisure facilities, free transport to work, free BUPA medical insurance etc etc. Working hours are 6.30 to 1.00 Sat to Wed and most people teach four 45 minute lessons a day. The students are fine ... no better or worse than tertiary level students elsewhere in KSA.
