The situation is this: I have one provisional offer in hand, but I have yet to communicate with the school. Another school, I have passed the phone interview, and the school wants me, but the recruiter has yet to send the provisional offer. If I sign the one in hand and then get the second one and like it better, can I still opt for it?

I guess what I'm saying is I'm unclear about the "provisional" aspect of it. The wording of the email was "indicate your interest by signing..." I just don't know if that is legally committing to it (forsaking all others) or if it simply means I'm still interested. My sense is that if I sign it and then get another provisional offer, I would not be able to accept it. I'm not asking for any personal testimony here--just clarification on the legal technicalities.

Mojoskl: You're the kind of poster that keeps Omani schools/recruiters up at night...one with scruples. If it says "indicate your interest by signing", and your "interested", then sign the thing for crying out loud, and, if, the other school comes up with a more "interesting" offer, then, you can lose "interest" in the first.

I'll guarantee you that you'll not be the first jilted at the altar if they find a more "interesting" prospect before you sign on the dotted line fer real!

One warning if both of the jobs are in Oman. If you sign and send back the first offer, they will start the visa procedure with the Ministry. That means that if you back out and take a second job in Oman... they will not be able to get a visa for you. Your name and passport will already be in the records assigned to the other employer. I know someone who had this happen and he ended up with neither job.

If they are in two different countries, there should be no problem and it isn't unusual. But do tell the first people ASAP so they know to stop the process.

Okay, this makes sense. Once you sign the provisional, you are committed, unless and until they cancel the offer.

Absolute newbie to Oman and the Middle East. My one overseas post has been Poland, and I didn't deal with any recruiters or ministries except the immigration. The main thing I don't understand is why they sent me a contract before I even had word one from the actual school. Are they just trying to lock up a pool of people on spec? The offer is fine, and the caveat of my credentials and refs having to check out doesn't bother me beause I know they will, but I DON'T know for sure if the school will want me. I DO know another school wants me, but that recruiter hasn't sent me an offer yet. Rolling Eyes

Here's another point... if you are applying through recruiters in Oman, they are likely recruiting for the same employer - The Ministry of Higher Education. Different recruiters cover different colleges out in the smaller towns.

I am assuming that you have done a search on this board for the various recruiters. Choose the one with the best reputation if possible. (first job can be difficult though)

Actually, the two recruiters in question are recruiting for Ministry of Manpower posts. That's another confusing thing. There are these two Ministries operating alongside each other. Yes, I have read about the recruiters. CECN seems to be the one with the fewest negative comments. The head there seems helpful, and I passed the phone interview with the school, but this is not the one that has already sent the provisional offer.

Thanks for everyone's input. I know what to do now, though I'm in a bit of a tight spot for the moment. After two months of job search, I'm ready for it to end the the next phase to begin.
