I have been told by the British Council (BC) that I can't become on IELTS Examiner with a TESOL certificate and that I must have a CELTA certificate. Anyone else having this problem or have any feedback? The classes for these certificates seem to be very much alike so I don't understand BC's position.

"Any" TESOL or Trinity TESOL ?
My guess is they mean Trinity TESOL specifically.

I was accepted into their weekend IELTS examiner training course in Guangzhou with a standard 120 hour TESOL training certificate from a college in Thailand. I also had to send them a detailed summary of my teaching experience with a breakdown of actual teaching hours to get in. If you can convince them you've got the basic training (what's often referred to as CELTA or equivalent) and you can adequately show you've got the minimum number of teaching hours under your belt, then it shouldn't matter where you took your course. But remember, having the required TESOL training and teaching experience is just the first step in becoming a certified IELTS examiner. I'm pretty sure they can and do accept anyone they want if they think an examiner candidate has the chops to pass the required IELTS Examiner test following their 2-day training seminar. |

A friend who is a 30-year career teacher was refused by the British Council because the TEFL course he did was not an approved course.
The course's website claims that it is BC-approved. Unfortunately this turned out not to be the case.
Make sure any course you plan on doing is going to be approved. My friend tried to do this but the BC admin did not return his emails, so he did the course regardless. Bad move |

It needn't be CELTA. It's preferred but not essential.

yes, CELTA isn't necessary. and, proven experience counts.
now, i'd be interested in how many of these IELTS examiner applicants go through the actual IELTS exams themselves and pay for it too.
cheers and beers |

The British Council and the CELTA business are tightly knit.
They are part of the same money printing machine, so promotion of one results in gains for the other. |

I have a TESOL from Oxford Seminars in USA (which I paid over $1000 for) as well as a BA from Rutgers University. However I won't be able to supply them with any transcripts, since I owe Rutgers almost $20000, and they won't release my transcripts until my account is settled at the bursar's office.
I have two questions:
1. Will the British Council request transcripts?
2. Will they accept a TESOL from Oxford Seminars? |

They prefer the original copy of your degree. |

It makes perfect sense when you make the Cambridge ESOL connection. IELTS is owned in part by Cambridge ESOL and the British Council. The CELTA is awarded by the University of Cambridge. Being from the USA won't help you either; those blokes think they own the English language. |
