Whether you get central AC in a flat depends on your employer and the building (often a symbiotic relationship). Window ACs tend to be "pay as you go" and more expensive than the central AC option.
In a villa, I always found split ACs to work better than window ACs and you had better control over which rooms were being cooled - oftentimes central ACs cool an entire floor or wing rather than the room you are occupying - which can add up |

| There are some at UAEU and HCT who get free electricity and water - the ones who live in Al Madha down town. The rest of us pay. Luck of the draw: personally I prefer not to live in a rabbit warren where some corridors are a tad noisy. |

OK...so... in your experienced opinions: which supermarket chain, in Abu Dhabi, has a reasonable assortment of products at the cheapest prices? Thanks! |

Well... that depends on what you consider "a reasonable assortment" and what is on your weekly shopping list. This is a trial and error thing for most of us. I would normally hit a couple supermarkets a week because you never know what will have come in... inventories are not as static as you might be used to. If you see your favorite brand of X, you buy a supply of it because you may not see it again for awhile.

| Electricity, water and internet access are free in on-campus housing at the University of Sharjah. I am not sure about the American University of Sharjah. |

| In Abu Dhabi the Co-op has the best choice and cheaper prices - many favorite brands here and they are usually open 24/7 |

Well, peanut butter will make you laff when you dog tries to eat it and 100% maple syrup will make him diabetic.
In response to your 2nd and 3rd questions: Yes and dear.

| I apologize for my forwardness, but I have a request to NCTBA. I really appreciate your humour and info in all the threads, but I was wondering if you could change your avatar - sorry I don't have enough posts to pm. I really want to learn about the UAE, but I am kind of tired of seeing a gun pointed at me all the time. It makes me kind of uncomfortable. I know it's pointed at Osama, and maybe I should get my head out of the sand, but I just don't want to think about guns and Osama and Homer and flag waving every time I read this really great info. Am I a total jerk? Thanks. |
