When I came to Taiwan, this American guy said that there was significant interest in learning Korean due to dramas, K-pop, etc. and that I might be able to tutor Korean.

Being a white American who just speaks Korean at the advanced level, but is not a native speaker (graduated from Yonsei University KLI), I kind of blew off what he said and figured "nobody's gonna pay a white guy to teach Korean in Asia."

Looks like I was wrong.

A girl at the tourist information center here on Cijin wants me to teach her Korean.

I really want to do it, because it'll help me keep up my Korean, and, as much as I dislike Korea, the language is fascinating and it makes me light up to explain it to others.

I learned Korean from the ground up and know how to teach it because I was 18 when I started learning it in earnest, and I remember the lesson formats/teaching methods vividly! I know all kinds of resources to help her, I know a ton of grammar rules that native speakers might not know, etc.

I'm wondering how much I should charge her for these lessons.

I want to give her a better price than the going rate for English lessons. I don't want to scare her off. I like explaining Korean. She's only about two minutes away from my home. She's a college student and willing to learn. This would be a fairly fun tutoring job.

What is fair/realistic to charge?

Most Taiwanese teachers ...of any language ...get paid around 300nt per hour, so I think that would be a fair "local" rate. You ask that price and let her bargain if you feel like it. Seems to me you are more into for the joy of it rather than making bucks.

Good luck!
