I can't imagine where you would do worse, from all I have heard. |
Perhaps at KSU? |
Ah, yes, now there is a race to the bottom. |

There are jobs in the region (other Gulf States). I would look hard to find something else outside of the Kingdom.
If you aren't getting other offers, and you feel that you must go there, at least try to find the least bad employer, and try to get a one year contract. Then you can get yourself into the region, get some experience and complete your first contract. Then move on. |

Conditions are getting worse for teachers in KSA and the Gulf. Housing is a clear example. I view with great alarm the increase in outsourcing, where an outside body is contracted to do recruitment and provide teaching facilities especially for Prep Year in Universities.. Payment of salaries for only 11 months is also a big negative.
I am happy that I will be out of this in a year or two.
My advice to newbies ? "Get out of ESL in the Gulf and get into an an honest profession, like white slavery or drug-dealing." |

I've been saying the same thing for a while too, Scot. We might have a 'race to the bottom' on our hands. Outside contractors are a scary new feature - I worked for one of them before and absolutely do not recommend it. At least if you are directly hired you have a better chance of sorting out the problems that arise. |

As posted by an administrator. I can't imagine doing worse, I suppose signing up for the USMC would be one option. The you could do a stint in Afghanistan. But at least you would have guns to defend yourself. |

Congrats- You served the same time as my older brother, RIP.
I had two brothers and a sister who were Marines, and two parents who were sailors.
The Marine option came to mind cause this morning I heard about a friend's nephew who just died in Afghanistan from an IED.
Marine Corps during war time is a dangerous business. |

Dear floja,
My condolences - Vietnam, like Afghanistan, was not a good place to be. The only redeeming feature for me has been that, after being there, not-so-nice places (such as, say, the Kingdom) and experiences all seem very minor in comparison.
I'm very sorry for your loss and that of your friend.
Regards,
John |
