The only paperwork you need - at least with the London embassy - is a completed visa form, medical form and attested degrees. I really don't think it's very different at all from the procedure in most Gulf states. Any 'aggravation' (and personally I haven't experienced all that much is usually the fault of the employer, not the embassy or ministry.

While there are many reasons why some people would want to avoid KSA, I really don't think the visa process - at least as compared to other Gulf states - is one of them.

Professional development. Alas, I too came to the Kingdom with such expectations. I've experienced classrooms in which edutainment was expected, and classes where full-on professionalism was required, and in Saudi something entirely else happens. "Putting up appearances" seems the expression that comes to mind.
