Love them or hate them, Crocs can be worn as indoor shoes here in Our Japan. They're all the rage among teachers at the high school where I work...for better or for worse.

Ahem...I own two pairs of the sordid shoe, one for indoor use and one for outdoor use.
Perversely, my use of Crocs is a strictly Japan-only personal policy. I really don't think I would ever buy them and use them back in New York City.
Here in Shizuoka prefecture, Crocs have been wildly popular during these two short years that I have inhabited the Land of the Rising Sun.

At my gym in Tokyo, CROCS were used as the toilet slippers.
I hate them. |

Ditto. I can't imagine I could bring myself to wear them anywhere other than the beach back in California, but here, they are totally ideal and functional for the hot, wet summer weather. Plus, it seems like half the people in suburban Japan are wearing them anyway, during the summer. When everybody else is doing it, I find I am not so self conscious about...wearing clown shoes. |

There are all kinds of Crocs anyway. I don't own any of the original big floppy ones, but I have a pair of rain boots, and some Mary-Jane style shoes that don't look in any way like the original Crocs. They also do some pretty good flip-flops.
For an indication of how popular Crocs are here, there's a 4-storey building in Aoyama which is all a Crocs shop (it's a pretty skinny building admittedly), and on weekends it is packed. |
