Hello everyone!
I've recently accepted an offer to work at a school in Malang, East Java. I'll probably be arriving in a month or so. Just wondering if there are any other teachers there at the moment? I heard that there aren't many expats living in Malang. |

If you don't have luck finding someone here, you might want to check out one of the other websites that deal with expats in Indonesia. There are several of them and I'm sure you can search for them. The only one I know of is www.livinginindonesiaforums.com
Best of luck to you!

You won't find as many expats in Malang as in Jakarta or Yogya. But they're definitely there!
Malang has always been a pretty cosmopolitan place, going back to Dutch colonial times when non-Indonesians would come to the highland areas to escape the really hot spots in Surabaya. There's still a lot of colonial architecture and Western amenities such as bakeries and restaurants. |

Yes, one of the things that attracted me to Malang was the climate. I lived in Padang before, which was very hot and possibly the rainiest city in Indonesia. |

One of the premier higher-education institutions in Malang is the local branch of IKIP (Teacher Training College), which is now called UM (Universitas Negeri Malang). As I recall, there are always foreign scholars and instructors in residence at UM as part of exchange programs with Western institutions. Check out the Linguistics and English faculties there. |

Toddumptious, which school are you going to?
I was planning on shifting to malang this year, but that's been delayed for 12 months... But I'm still interested in keeping up to date on what's available over there... |

Hi Wilkor,
I'll be working for TBI Malang. I know there is an EF in Malang too but don't know of any other schools. |

toddumptious,
Please let me know how you find TBI - it was at the top of my list of schools to check out in Malang and I'd be interested in finding out more from a teacher's perspective. I have a student at the moment who studied there before he came to Aus, and his feedback was very positive.

I'm not in Malang now, but I worked there for a period of time and may have some insights of particular interest to you. If you would care to send me a "pm" please do.
More generally, I would say that Malang (and the surrounding area) is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't wanna live there: a year, maybe two, would be enough for most expats methinks.
Having said that, the maid I had working for me while I was there is one of the finest, most honest and hard working people you could ever hope to me. I still have her contact details and if anyone is in Malang and looking for as good a maid as you will find anywhere I can put you in touch with her. |
