|
|
Showtime and Orbit have now merged and beginning in August will combine all their channels for $65 a month (less if you opt for fewer channels; a bit more if you opt for digital recorder with hard drive).
You'll get:
11 premium movie channels (no commercials or censorship)
2 commercial movie chs.
6 pay per view
7 sports
9 for TV series
5 entertainment fluff (Hollywood Ch., Fashion, etc.)
10 kiddie
7 documentary/education (the usual suspects: History, Natl Geo, etc.)
10 news (including my favorite, Orbit News, which consolidates the best US news shows onto one channel: Face the Nation, Meet the Press, many more.)
9 music
Total should be about 75 English channels. The $65 is just $5 more than I pay for Showtime alone.
Got to www.orbit.net for details. |

Assuming this applies to Sharjah I would definitely be willing to dish out this amount for the range of entertainment/news! The only issue I can see is if there is a satellite dish. Where I'm going there are regulations about where and how visible satellite dishes need to be. |

Yup, certainly applies to Sharjah and just about everywhere in the Gulf. As for the dishes, you can probably find a way...local technicians usually do. These dishes are about four feet wide. Good luck. |

This merger is already starting.
we have showtime, and are now getting orbit channels... which is nice, but also kind of annoying because we lost several channels we liked.
oh well... life goes on, and they almost continually fiddle with the stations adding new ones, removing others without warning |

Since you will be in university housing, you may not be allowed to put in another dish. I was of the impression that the campus already had sat TV, so this may very well already be added... keep your fingers crossed.

Showtime has added three Orbit channels for free until they merge fully in August. |

This is what I found on the website:
"The residential housing complex is presently equipped to provide 59 different channels, having a wide variety of popular programs representing the diversity of our residential campus."
I've also found out that it costs AED150 p/mth. |

That's about $40... very cheap. The cheapest sat systems are normally about $60+ if you want English channels. Once you get there, you may find out that it will be affected by this new merger of the two big sat providers. My last position I had Showtime (do not confuse this with US showtime) because it was cheaper than Orbit and you didn't have to buy a dish.
Like I said... I think ya gotta be there... and then see what the options are.
