Hi,

I'm trying to look for a good place to get certified, and I found that the city college near my house offers a 6 course TEFL program as part of their Education department. It comes out to about 100 hours I think...

Would this be a good choice, or would it be better to go for one of the companies I've found online like Bridgetefl or even a CELTA course?

DOn't know much about bridgtefl, but it gets medium reviews.

CELTA is the big brand name, but it does have a good rep.

The one at your city college might be excellent, but we'll need more details to be sure...

Best,
Justin

I guess what I'm asking is more like would it be better to go with a company that has a big recognizable name? Would this help in my job hunt? Or would any certification that's "good" quality look just as good to employers?

Basically - what would an employer look at? Do they just glance over the name of the cert you get or do they want a description of the course, or are they only concerned with being certified in the first place, etc?

Sounds like my TESL certificate (10 TESL upper-division credits with the education department). It depends on your goals. Six college-level courses will take quite some time to complete, but may be considered credit towards a BA or BEd (like mine). If you are interested in long-term teaching, this may be a good option for you. If you are only interested in short-term TEFL work (TEFL vs TESL) then you may find something like CELTA to be for you.

Does it include at least six hours of teaching practice with real ESL students? Could you post the link to the schools program?
