Thanks. Based on the prices of food I saw on the page, it seems that food is about 2X the cost of it here in the U.S. What about appliances?

The reason why I ask is that I want to take more things with me than the 2 suitcase limit will allow. An extra piece of luggage runs $150-200 (50 pound limit), depending on the airline.

I checked with a freight consolidating company and they will send 2 cubic meters (about 35 cubit feet) with a huge weight limit from the port here in Portland to my door in Jeddah for about $700.

Do apartments usually have microwaves? regular ovens? irons? vacuum cleaners? If I ship enough stuff with this freight company it will be a good value.

I have been overseas for 10 years. I spent too much time in China living out of suitcases "just for a while". When I go to KSA I want to take those things with me that will give me a modest amount of creature comforts.

The lunatic CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) ensures that foord thoughout the EU is MEGA-expensive. It is much cheaper than in the US.

I do notice that food in KSA is cheaper than in EU - especially in Northern Europe.

Well, I have found fruit and veg to be cheap. Cereals (well, decent whole grain ones) are NOT! Appliances are expensive here and c.rap!!

Bread is also cheap, rice is thru the roof, soft drinks and snacks are also cheap. Fast food is also very readily available and can be very reasonable. This is probably why people put on weight when they come here, since they are indoors most of the time in AC and unless you go to gym (drive?!), you'd be mad to go for a walk here as the heat and humidity are so oppressive.

As mentioned, the local foods are cheap however the imported American foods are not. Often times Americans arent used to cooking from scratch regularly so if you are looking to purchase quick and easy processed foods you are used to buying in America- chances are it is more expensive. And you definitely get a feel for how cereal obsessed we are in America after noticing how small the cereal aisle is in Saudi!

It is much cheaper here in Saudi than in the USA. I used to spend $1,000. per month six years ago and that was watching every penny. Here in Saudi I only spend a small fraction of that and I never consider the cost!

Remember that the Saudi Riyal is equal to 26 cents. For example a can of coke or Pepsi costs 1 riyal 26 cents while in the states the same can would cost you 4 riyals or about $1.

Now I'm from California where things are a bit more expensive, but still.....
