|

I am a British guy with a BA in English, CELTA and two years of experience in private language schools in Italy.
The cost of living vs. TEFL wages in Italy is no longer in my favour, and I'm looking to move to south east Asia in September.
I've visited China, Hong Kong and Japan (Kyoto) in the past, and I have been applying to jobs in China mainly because the cost of living is low.
However, a lot of people have been encouraging me to check out jobs in Japan. My good friend's wife is from Chiba, and a know some other Japanese people, so I feel that I would have some people to turn to if I had any problems, whcih is encouraging. It also seems like a very clean, organised place, and I like the food.
My questions are thus:
- With my qualifications and experience, what type of TEFL job should I be applying for?
- Based on the above, what compensation can I expect to receive? Would I be able to live a decent lifestyle with the odd meal out, odd boozing session? Bit of travel on days off? Maybe even save a bit?
- How is the work life balance? All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy after all, and I can work my arse off and have no social life back home.
I appreciate any input. Thanks! |

Firstly... have you read the FAQ stickies?
Secondly... have you done a search for things such as 'costs of living'?
I'm betting your answer will be no to both.
And you have let it a little late to get a job lined up for a September start if you are looking to work in schools. Schools reopen for the 2nd term Aug/Sept and the work visa application alone (which you can only apply for once you have an employer willing to be your sponsor) can take about 2 months to process. |

Eikaiwa, ALT through dispatch or JET, business English agency.

Decades-old standard (not legal minimum) salary has been roughly 250,000 yen/month, but in the past couple of years, it has dropped slightly.

Short answer, yes. With 250K per month, you will spend roughly half that in basic necessities. What you do with the rest is up to you. Lifestyle dependent. Go out as you described, and drink moderately, and you should expect to spend another 50,000 yen/month, leaving you with 125,000-50,000 = 75,000 for EVERYTHING else in life.

Depends on you and the job. Since you have some experience, there is likely to be less time spent learning how to prepare lessons. Eikaiwa hours or bus. English agency hours may not allow 2 consecutive weekend days off, while the ALT hours would. Eikaiwa clients are available any time of day, so you may find the typical hours run from noonish to 9pm. ALT is a 9-5 job, Mon - Fri. |

Just in case it helps with your job search, China and Japan aren't actually part of southeast Asia.
SE Asia would be Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia etc. |
