Seems that the Taiwanese tertiary sector in Taiwan is in a real mess. According to a recent China Post article, the MOE is forcing "universities to delay student graduations to prevent the country's already high unemployment rate from rising further". Of course the Taiwanese economy is in dire straits, but an MOE directive to universities to raise pass rates and fail more students to ensure both a lower official unemployment rate, plus a continuation of fees, is stooping to a new low.

Go here for the story: http://www.chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/national/national-news/2009/07/24/217655/MOE-denies.htm

This is no surprise.

All you need at some unis to pass is a pulse.

Taiwan is a society that has too many universities. As good as the reform under President Chen was to democratize higher ed the DPP took it too far.

What is it, 95% of thereabouts of school leavers go to into higher education now? And once in the system very few get thrown out for poor work. Basically once you are in you will graduate at some point in time. Just when that is now might be an issue the MOE is trying to influence.
