I haven't heard that story yet, but I doubt the locals here would get too worked up over a single, or even a bunch of Western fundies. They are too busy enjoying life, going on picnics and trying to pass the TOEFL. However, get them started on politics and you're in for a long night.
This weekend is election time as the Kurds go to the polls. Sunday will be a holiday, the roads are going to be closed to non emergency traffic and the airport and shops are also closing. So, don't try flying in to buy any jazzy baggy kurdish trousers. I'll be staying home with a case of beer and a stack of new pirated DVD's, zor bash!
BTW, the region now has it's very own airline, Amir Air. Ran by Kurds, but I haven't tried them yet as I'm worried they may lose their whey!

| I just informally signed my contract to work at AUIS for the next couple years in the continuing education department. I'm really looking forward to the change in culture after working in East Asia for the past few years. I've appreciated the constructive discussion here guys. Thanks! |

| The Kurdistan esteemed in the west as a beacon of democracy and good government is a myth. I'll bet the U.S State Department believes the multi-storied building frames that dot the city of Sulaimani are signs of economic development. They're not. They're giant, never-to-be finished piles of concrete used to funnel public funds into the private pockets of the ruling party. |

a serious opposition developed within the looser PUK, led by the first Deputy Secretary General and co-founder of the PUK, Nawshirwan Mustafa, and other courageous and honest former members of the politburo desirous of real democracy and sickened by the monumental corruption in both parties. (One can tell they're honest just from the shabby clothes they wear and the tiny, book-strewn houses in which they live.) In March of this year, they formed a rival PUK election list called "Change."
Change admires classical Western liberalism and the American Founding and advocates fiscal transparency in party, government, and business; a professional civil service; election-law reform; and a vast contraction of the public sector.

Hope and Change!????
What do the experts in Kurdistan say? |

Corruption? I'm shocked, I tell you... just shocked... I assume that you've seen the movie Casablanca? Nothing has changed...
You'd think it was... New Jersey...

Oh no no offence but I think Mekanie Pillips is a bit off her rocker. I am sure she means well but her and Oriani Fallaci and Ayaan Hishi Ali are charming but alarming ladies! |

Dear LOL and Cleo,
"Kum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum."
(Yes, I know the first word should be spelled with a "C", but it gets "bleeped" out that way)
St. Augustine Opera Omnia, vol II. col. 962, Letter 211
Regards,
John |

Dear LOL,
Heck, I was in the seminary for a few years - so:
Ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti
To err is human, to forgive divine.
Regards,
John |
