|
|
Hi everyone,
I'm planning to send some excess baggage, hopefully to arrive at the same time as myself. Since the baggage I'm sending won't necessarily be coming on the same plane (I'm using an independent company to the airline I'm flying to save costs) would I have to pick up this baggage from the cargo terminal or someplace else? Is the place that I have to pick it up far from the arrivals hall at Dubai International airport?
I'll be flying Emirates from Australia if that helps. Thanks in advance for your help. |

The carrier should be able to tell you. If it goes to Cargo Village, then it's a taxi ride from Terminal 3. |

So the idea would be to have the luggage picked up and shipped a few days before your flight's departure? This would mean you could pick it up in Dubai on arrival, right? |

The cargo terminal is not far from terminal 1 (where you will be arriving if on an airline other than Emirates) or terminal 3 (Emirates terminal).
You will have to open the suitcases/packages for inspection (really a formality) if they do go to the Cargo village. |

I did this three times. I would drop off the boxes/suitcases to the British Airways freight terminal to go on a particular flight. Then since I knew a shipping company that had offices (or agents) in my destination, I would pay the fee for them to go clear it and deliver it. After my first experience in the Gulf clearing my stuff in Oman, I found that it was worth paying for someone else to do it.
The three times varied as to timing. Once to Abu Dhabi, it was in my hotel room when I arrived. It had been delivered to my employer a month before my arrival because I was on a RTW trip that had been planned before they hired me. The other two times it arrived a few days after me and was delivered to my flat. These were small shipments... a few small boxes of books and materials... and a couple large suitcases. Per kilo rate was near half of the accompanied excess baggage costs, so it was worth it for the heavy stuff.

Does anyone know if Dubai airport charges per day for holding cargo? If so do you know what is the daily charge? |

I think you have a few days grace before you start getting charged. Check with whoever is shipping your goods, they should be able to tell you. |

Great. Thanks for your help everyone. I was just wondering, in case the excess luggage is located far away from the terminal I get off at (Terminal 3) and for some reason I'm not able to retrieve it on the day, do you know of any companies there who will transport the goods to locations in the UAE? Or would I have to pick them up myself? |

If you have a freight forwarder, they may be allowed to pick up and deliver to your residence (check with your shipper). Otherwise, you may have to go and clear it yourself (time consuming but doable) |
