Try a supermarket called 'Superama'

Its a part of Wal-Mart, but they are smaller stores and are usually located in upmarket parts of cities. They have a bigger than average selection of foods, such as cheeses, bagels and organic foods.

I have even found ASDA products imported from the UK at Superama.

I think it's your best bet!

Heres their webpage link, and you can see if theres one near you!

Just got back from Comercial Mexicana. I found cheddar, pepper-jack, and marbled jack. I also found rye bread and baking soda (in the pharmacy). Still no corn-meal, but they also recommended Walmart. The workers at that store were very available and quite friendly.

Thanks again guys.

I'm havin' a sammich. Smile (Smiling like a 5 year old with an ice cream cone on a summer's day.)

Anyway, I sometimes find cheddar at Comercial Mexicana, too.

I find something there that says Cheddar on the pack but doesn't contain Cheddar. Having spent my life half-an-hours drive from Cheddar, Somerset, UK (although ironically, Cheddar is no longer made in Cheddar!!!) I recognize a good one when I see it.

American-style cheddar, that is (and I'm not referring to the processed cheese food that's called queso americano but what we call cheddar in North America).. I'm aware it's different from what you call cheddar.

Well, I'm a US Southerner so I understand cornbread. Why don't you just use masa? I've personally never had an oven while in Mexico, a fact I'm just now realizing, so I haven't tried it. It's ground finer than our cornmeal, but I think it would work, wouldn't it?

I once found the only package of baking soda at our local Soriana. Ask for sodium bicarbonate; it translates better! I bought cheddar cheese at Walmart in Guadalajara, and rye bread from the "healthy" bakeries that were all over the place in my neighbourhood (near Plaza del Sol).

In Queretaro I go to the el Molina and ask for polenta that is corn meal like at home in Canada. If you are in the DF for heavens sake you have a huge city to find things in Queretaro is only around 1 million and not that many foreigners hense not much in the way of foreign food. Costco is great for stuff and so is Walmart. Try Mexican cheese some of it is wonderful.

I have found everything on my list, except for the cornmeal. Thanks to the members of this forum. I have searched high and low and still can't find corn meal.
