My boyfriend and I are considering moving to the Czech Republic to teach English this fall. We are both TEFL certified and have a year and 1/2 experience teaching English to both adults and children. From everything I have read on the forum, I assume we should be able to find jobs once we get there.

So my question is this: what would be the latest we could arrive and still expect to find a job somewhat quickly? Right now, we are looking at heading over the first week in September. Is this too late? We wouldn't necessarily have to have jobs at the same school, just as long as we found positions at schools near to each other so that we could still live together without too long of a commute.

Also, we are Americans, if that matters. Smile

Thanks in advance!

Hello Elena Sprick.

Nice to see someone using their real name on the forum.

The new school year kicks off mid-September.
Schools begin opening (if they closed in August), after the summer holidays at the beginning of September.
Heading over at the start of September will be fine but you shouldn't expect to actually start teaching until mid-to-late September.

Best route really is to send your CV or Resume to schools a week before you plan to arrive and if possible to arrange ahead an interview schedule.

If you choose a large school then I don't see why you shouldn't expect to both be teaching for the same school and couples represent for the schools more stability than single teachers.

Hope it helps.

Hezky den!/Lovely day!

Thanks so much for the great advice!

Also, do you know any websites or anything that have a good listing of schools so that we could find ones to send our CVs to?

Thanks again!

This list seems comprehensive:

Good luck with the move & job search - I am doing exactly the same thing Smile

cheers!

That's a good starting point.
When I originally arrived in Prague, 14 years ago, I grabbed a Yellow Pages and called random schools and arranged for interviews that way.
Things of course have now moved on and another good resource is also Seznam.cz (type 'Jazykove Skoly Praha' into the search box).

ITTP has an updated Prague school list which we provide to all clients of the program: the list includes recommended schools and excludes schools which are currently not recommended, for various issues including poor visa support.

If you don't have this support from your TEFL/TESOL school then my advice is to interview and try to also meet with teachers at the school for their feedback on teaching conditions there.

Hope it helps!

It gets cold in November and is quite cold Jan/Feb/March - but there is no set timeclock! Sometimes more, sometimes less:) Like everywhere else.

One thing about the cold here, it is humid cold. So, if you're from somewhere like the West of the US/Canada where you're used to dry heat and cold, it's COLDER here - it kind of gets in your bones. So, 0 here can feel like -10 there, for example.
