I assume that you are asking this question because you have no credentials? TheSilentKind suggests that there is a new rule that requires a BA+CELTA/Cert+3 years experience for the entry level Ministry jobs where the hiring is done by recruiters for the jobs around the country. That may or may not be a "law" that covers all employers. I hope it is because the Omani students deserve qualified teachers. |
I am asking because my degrees are not in education, but I have a cert and experience. |

Ah Ha!! We finally get to the real question. It did take awhile. I have never heard of any employer (or country in the Gulf) that requires that the BA is in education. In fact, I have one, but I was in the minority. The only time it came into play was when I applied for my MA in TEFL Fellowship. They required either an education BA or teaching experience.
Actually for those with a BA + Cert, they will look more closely at the Cert and many employers won't accept those weekend quicky versions. ME employers are very focused on the CELTA.

Thanks for the useful info, VS.
How do they feel about someone with an advanced degree and a non-CELTA cert? |

Generally, Gulfwide... unless the advanced degree is closely related - Applied Linguistics or TESL/TEFL - it won't bump you up the pay scale or help you to get hired.
Saudi is the most liberal on credentials considered by employers. But, Oman is probably a more pleasant place to start in the Gulf. Do you have 3 years of experience or more? I haven't noticed any ads for the Oman recruiters lately, but I don't follow the jobs boards around the net. You might also try the University of Nizwa. They have a website.

Really appreciate that, VS. Yes, I have more than 3 years experience.
I am guessing that you think Nizwa is a better option than those with that Hawthorn recruiter Majali guy, right?
Their website didn't list any ESL positions, only Literature/ Translation/ Linguistics. |

I'm suspecting that you have read my previous posts.
Send off an ap to UoN anyway, because they are not terribly efficient at getting out offers on a timely basis. If I was a betting woman, even if they think they are done hiring for EFL, they will still need teachers. (because people gave up and took other offers) No guarantees, of course.
