Hello everyone, I was just wanting to ask one question. How many rmb does one need to have to live and work in guangzhou for one month and can live comfortably. Thanks for all your feedback.

6000 after rent.

Appropriate rent is 2000 - 5000 depending on location (unless of course it's included in your compensation package)

6000 after rent and you can be nice and comfortable, or budget and save.

More than 6000 after rent and you could be comfortable and save too.

12K/mo net...anything less and you're being taken advantage of.

Do Enjoy!

There are plenty of folks that make do on substantially less than the figures mentioned above. Some Chinese teachers live comfortably on 4000, paying off a new apartment.

Sure, some Chinese teachers on 3000/mo., own a car, two large apartment buildings, a car, and so forth. If you think you understand the income structure of a Chinese teacher, you got your name right.

I have to hand it to grumpy here. Two posts today made me laugh out loud. The one above, and the one about "never mind about MI5." Heh, good stuff.

@Sinobear -

The OP's questions wasn't

"at what point in the salary scale am I not being taken advantage of?"

(and besides, how on earth can you address this without knowing contract hours?)

@nobleignoramus -

nor was it:

"how much can some Chinese teachers live off comfortably and pay off an apartment?"

It was ~

My apologies Sir Laurence!

To answer the question directly: you should make in excess of 12K RMB/mo in Guangzhou to live comfortably, if anyone says any less, they're not really living comfortably.

I am duly chastened.

If 'one' is a Chiense teacher - ? Doesn't a Chinese English teacher qualify? Any qualitative differences between the two in terms of comfort level, or the feel good factor?

In my village we had a power-cut today - and today was mighty hot - some of the locals took this in their stride by cooling-off in a dirty drainage ditch.

Noble Ig - you ever been to China - you ever notice how the local feel-good factor may make others feel yuck Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I think its a question of each individuals idea of exactly what comfort is.

12,000 a month sounds a lot to me!!! I was earning 12,000 a quarter in Hainan ... and I lived very very comfortably on that when I was there in 2008!

My idea of comfort is 40 fags a day, enough money to eat every meal outside (of my home, but in) local restaurants, enough to drink beer whenever I want, and enough to travel to other towns within a 2 hour bus ride twice a month and stay in hotels.

Would that cost 12k a month in GZ?

Probably why most China teaching jobs have become nore to do with employers filling their possitions with 40 fags/day (fag = cigarette in English slang) and bottles of cheap beer type employees - rather than look towards EFL as an actual profession.

In such an environment - one can envisage that most long term professional respect and advancement soon flies out of the window - no wonder so many folk abandon China EFL after they get bored of the cheap fags!!!!!!!!

Good to know you own a whole village wherever in China that may be - no matter how many hovels are under your jurisdiction, the village chieftain certainly lives comfortably in a palace.
