Hello! I'm going to graduate from university next month and I am currently studying abroad at the University of Tokyo. I decided that I would like to come back to Japan soon and work as an English instructor.

I am applying to the main Eikaiwa companies this coming Monday, however I'm returning to America at the end of August because my student visa will run out. Should I apply to the Tokyo offices or to the USA offices? I e-mailed some of the companies but they never replied.

Thank you!

Most, if not all, the big chains have frozen recruitment which might explain the lack of a response.

Is this really true? Many of the companies such as AEON say that they recruit new teachers every month.

I'm not sure if it's true or not (although I've heard it so many times recently that I believe it to be true, or at least generally true- freezing recruitment may mean that they are trying to keep their staffing level even, or slightly down, which means that they will replace people who leave, if they have to).

If you're getting your information from their web site, then you should keep in mind that they aren't going to say that they've frozen recruitment, because that comes across as not much better than saying "We're in a bad, bad place right now because of the economy!".

That makes me panic. I'm going to call the Toronto office to ask for sure.

Toronto? You wrote you were returning to America. Don't they have an office in the States?

I live in the Detroit area. Toronto is closer than the other recruiters. They also have interviews weekly.

You can extend your stay by changing from student visa to temporary visitor's visa.

Just keep in mind what others are telling you, and that some eikaiwas will not interview in Japan.
